Reverse problems..

hey i noticed on my 1990 SHO 5spd, i cant put it reverse with out putting it in first before i put it in reverse, if you follow me....before i go into reverse i need to put it first, if i dont it grinds. i am pretty sure thats not normal, but has this happened to anyone before? is it a sign that my tranny is on its last limb? thanks..

It's normal. The owners manual states that you must put the car in a forward gear first then put it in reverse.

oh really? well then that changes everything...well thanks guys, i am glad. i thought my tranny was on the highway to ****...lol :bonk:

half-way there, I think.
The reason why it grinds into reverse is because that gear has no syncro, unlike 99% of the other transmissions in the world today that do.

My owners manual states to hold in the clutch for 3 seconds then to engage reverse. Doing this almost never results in a grind. If I am in a rush its 1st gear then reverse works fine as well.

When I used to let other people drive my SHO thats the first thing i would hear. I would just cringe when they backed out of the driveway. It seems like every ford with a mt is like that.
