replacment speaker for factory sub

how big is the speaker and what rms if posible...2 or 4 ohm

if its gen 2 its a 6.5 and you could upgrade to a 8 if you wanna cut the box a little bit.gen 1 is two 6x8's under the 5x7's

i know now that the stock rms for the sub is 85 watts which is pretty good so i think i should be alright with the stock system

it does sound good other then the sub now when i unplug it

does anyone know the ohms on the speakers because i dont wana put 4 ohms on a 2 ohm system

That 85 watts is at 8 or 10 ohms (standard stock stuff). If you replace it with any aftermarket driver typically 2-4 ohms you will easily overdrive the amp.

The factory sub is a 4 ohm sub i tested mine before i used the factory amp to run a cheap 10 inch sub in the factory box just do some cutting and you could fit up to a 10 inch sub if you want.

just remember, the volume of the box is only about .3cu/ft or something along those lines..my 8inch sub recommended at least .35. And even then, it probably has a lot more potential if it had a proper MDF box instead of that cruddy composite plastic stocker. I think 10 is pushing it..yea it might fit..but will it sound good with the weak amp...stuffed into a tiny box? Will you fry the amp?

The way i see it...if you're not going to upgrade the amp, just find a working stock replacement off someone here.

Or save $149.99, go to Circuit City, and get some cheap ghetto bass (The dual SuperThumper 12inchers in the less then horrible quality bandpass box with the blue neon light..all powered by the "500" watt AmpMaster amplifier).

That's exactly what I did. I should have taken pictures. I even had a JBL 8" sub lying around to use.

Here's an 8" mod. with the kicker and probably most other drivers you must enlarge the hole and break the supports off inside so your replacment driver will fit down into the enclosure. The white ring around the outside of the speaker is a port I added in order to port the sound into the cabin just as the stock driver was. It required aditional cuting to the rear deck and is not necessary just the I desired to do it.

but im going to run it off the stock amp since it has 85 watts rms is should bump pretty well

i just took min apart today and the cone is almost allthe say detacted from the speaker

i really wich there was a good 6.5" sub out there
there are bidbass ones like my 2002 ta has with the monsoon system...waybe i will use those

i think someone on here used a JL Audio 6.5 inch sub..and said it pretty much just dropped into the factory box..

But i think those are pretty pricey..and like a lot of power..

I think i might modify the rear deck as well...perhaps cut a 10 inch hole if possible...cause i might upgrade later to a 10 inch in a custom box, mounted under the rear deck.

since im running on the stock amp im sure some $15 piramid subs sould be good enough hahaha but also found some jl audio and fosgate 6.5 subs

Having a 10" sub in the factory box using the factory amp dont sound to bad. I have been running with this setup for about 90 days or so. One other thing that i need to do is make a tube that goes from the sub to the rear deck lid so that more sound goes into the car.

So, I have been exploring replacement options. I just want a decent replacement, not a 8" or 10" that needs modifications that my amp cannot push. The JL Audio 6WO has caught my atttention as a decent replacement and I was wondering what your thoughts are. Are you happy with its performance with the factory amp? Does is sound as good as the original?

Plan B is to buy a JL Audio component set, like the VR650-CSi and use one woofer in each enclosure. Then sell the extra enclosure and sub and to someone in need. I would have a pair of crossovers and tweeters to rid of too.

The JL Audio 6W0 only requires a 75W RMS and.15-.20 cu.ft. of space to operate and costs $100. Looks like a winner to me considering the box is already there and the amp pushes 85W. The box may be a little big though. It has to sound better than what I've got now- POP-pa-POP...POP-pa-POP

Actually, I have found about 3 options for a blown factory sub:
1.) For around $60 or so, you can go down to the Ford stealership and buy the subwoofer speaker for a Ford Explorer ('91 - '96) with the JBL system. The speaker will have a grill on it, just pop off the grill and it will fit right into the SHO speaker box. You can also get a genuine Taurus speaker from Ford, but I think it is over $100 and it is the same speaker as the Explorer's minus the grill.

2) Usually, when a sub is blown, it is just the surround. Most speaker repair places will carry the foam surround, which you can glue onto the sub's speaker. I've used plain old elmer's white glue and it has worked well, just don't be too sloppy when glueing it back down and make sure to center the speaker in its frame so it doesn't hit the internal pole as it moves up and down. Usually costs me around $12 for a 6-1/2" surround.

3) There are several companies that make 6-1/2" subs out there. I went to a local speaker repair shop and they were selling a Taiwan-clone speaker that was rated around 120W for about $35 or so. For me, it was a no brainer. Installed it and sounds as good as the factory original, especially since the factory sub's amp is rated for only 85 watts.

Thanks for the info about the sub options.

The first thing I checked on both subs was the surround. They both are in great shape. No holes or seperation. I had a 10" MTX sub seperate at the surround. I applied some silicone adheasive and it was like new again. These JBL subs appear to have an internal problem or separation at the base of the cone. I have not removed them from the box yet so I cannot verify the source or the problem.

I already ordered a JL Audio 6WO for $89.99. Should arrive in a few weeks. If I'm not happy with the performance of that I will definitly order th $60 Explorer sub from Ford. I would have done that first if I knew that was viable option.

I got around to replacing the blown JBL factory with a JL Audio 6W0 4 ohm for $89. It sounds the same as the original when it was good- no better. It calls for 75W and the factory amp pushes 85W. I think it may sound better in a smaller enclosure. I would recommend using a new Ford Explorer sub for $60. Here is the before and after...

I had to resuse the trim ring from the JBL sub to make the JL Audio sub fit correctly.

i used the 10w0 and its nice and punchy with orig amp and box.. added some filler in the box wherever i could too give the feel of a larger space.. its a bit underpowered though.

defiantly better than the stock unit however. i changed the head unit at the same time which may account for some of the improvment, and i discarded the piece that fits over the woofer and between the decklid.

i'm pretty confident i can get better sound yet if i make a smallish custom box utilizing stock brackets but facing toward the taillights in the trunk. but then stock look is negated ;/
