My speedo is making the infamous noises and last night I noticed it was bouncing +/- 5 mph when near the 115 mph mark (don't ask why I was going that fast in the first place :D ). I'm going to attempt greasing the cable tomorrow and the speedo itself. What type of lubricant is acceptable? Something like WD-40 or similar, or should a non-liquid type of grease be used? Name brands if you know of any please.

Also in the event that the head needs replacement, can the actual speedo section be replaced without interfering with the odometer? I can't remember off the top of my head. It's been a while since I looked a SHO speedo setup. I know it's just easier to replace the whole assembly, speedo & odo together, but don't want to screw with the milage issue and all that crap. Any thoughts? Gonna tackle this project tomorrow. Hope the speedo just needs a greasing. Same goes for the cable...damn SHO's squint thumbs_u

The speedometer head includes the odometer so replacing one involves the other. The bouncing needle is usually the result of a worn or dry speedometer cable. You can unclip the cable from the rear of the speeedo head without removing the cluster, but chances are your hands are not small enough to fit in the tight spaces to reach it.

You may want to remove the head to lubricate the needle movement's bearings with a light machine oil such as 3-IN-1. The cable should be removed from the sheath, cleaned and relubed with speedo cable ****. I have used Lithium grease with good results. If any of the metal strands are cut or damaged, you should replace the cable. You can also replace only the core. I have seen cut-to-fit speedo cable cores for around $7, but I do not remember where I saw it.

For information, if you look at the WD-40 can, you will not see "lubricant" pronounced very loudly. The name of the product comes from its original purpose: water displacer - 40th attempt. Nice tricia.

No, my hands are probably too small to fit back there. I'll just unclip it behnd the firewall.

Thanks Scott for your help. I'll pull the whole cable out and inspect it for wear. Lithium grease is what expected someone to suggest, just wanted to double check. Hopefully greasing the speedo head will get rid of the bouncing needle.
