hello, im a new member to these forums and have recently been looking into becoming a new SHOwner. I actually found a gen II MTX SHO in the area and found out that it needs tranny work. I havent actually looked at the car to be able to tell if its the clutch or if it really is the trans, but i thought i should be informed before i go look for myself. Anyway to my question: how difficult is it to remove the entire transmission (assuming i were just putting a used tranny from a donor car) i have taken out trannys from vettes and such, but never on a frontwheel drive car and just wanted to know what you guys think.

Don't let anybody kid you - it IS a big job. It is doable on jack stands (I did it), but you have to disassemble a good chunk of the front end and support the engine while doing so. Seeing as you are in Wischeesland, there will likely be plenty of rust to deal with (unless it is a Southern car). That adds to the time. (Impact wrenches are highly valuable here...)

If you've been deep enough into other cars to drop RWD trannys before, this job shouldn't scare you, but it will take a good bit of time, so don't think you can bang it out in an evening or anything like that. It took me and a helper a full 14 hrs to get the tranny out, new clutch in, and tranny + subframe back in place on one day. I still had a lot of reassembly left to do the next day. That was with the car already high up on jack stands and some other prep work done the night before.
