All the tar removal products I've seen say that they wont hurt the finish.. does this mean that they're generally safe to use on the plastic body panels? Just seems like a bad idea to spray solvent on plastic parts.

How about more benign substances, like WD-40?

thanks,
Nate

I would definately start by soaking it in WD-40. If that doesnt work, then you pretty much have to go for the nasty stuff.

FWIW I work at a detail shop (have for the last 2 1/2 years) and we use a solvent called "Pro-Sol" for tar and it leaves no ill effects on the car or on the moldings. I think any type of industrial strength solvent will work for you and wont hurt anything.

Don't think I'm crazy or anything, but I've actually heard peanut butter works well getting tar off vehicles. I have never tried this, just heard it, so I don't know myself whether this is a myth or not.
