I know when I did mine, I had to use a pry bar to get it moved far enough to slide the cable back on. Much easier if you have someone helping you.

How hard should it be to compress the clutch fork arm when attempting to
reattach the clutch cable?

You're not supposed to move the clutch release arm to reattach the cable!!

Prop up the clutch pedal to release the clutch quadrant self adjuster. Then pull the clutch cable forwards enough to get it back through the clutch release arm.

Just prop up the clutch pedal with a section of 2x4 or a wrench until it's at the highest position. Re-attach the cable and then take your piece of 2x4 or wrench out from under the pedal. Push down on the clutch pedal a couple of times. After that just take your toe and lift up on the clutch pedal to make sure it's adjusted properly. If it clicks a couple of times then you adjusted it. If it doesn't then it's good to go.

That's not uncommon actually and it won't hurt anything the way you did it. I've used a tire iron to help push the head of the cable back into the slot on the lever arm. It's just easier to prop the pedal up and then put the cable back on, allows for a little more slack in the cable plus it helps to eliminate the need to adjust the cable.
