Ok so I need a rear windshield and I cant find one. safe light or any of the other glass shops, ford no one can't get one. I'm having a hard time believing that for all the taurus and sable cars on the road there is not one rear windshield , I tryed to get the one with the the third light , no dice . So where can I look ?

Just got new glass on the back of my '89 through Safelite. Quick, clean and they replaced all the trim around the window. And they vacuumed the whole car even though they got the old glass out in one piece. All this in the parking lot at work.

I know yours is a second gen, but if the glass is available for an '89 it should be for later years, too.

Perhaps you should try making an appointment and getting an estimate from their website?

I own a glass shop and I have only found one, located in florida for 400 plus shipping. Nothing in canada or the us. This is a trend I find more and more. While companies are cutting back, more and more. back windows, vents and rear door windows are getting harder to find, even on some 10 year old cars. The more expensive the glass, the quicker it will go out of production because it costs more to stock. The second gen window has molded rubber (mine looks like crap) so it is more money to make, ships less in a crate etc. Your best bet is to search salavage yards for one, make sure they protect the defrost when removing it. The rubber is the most important thing though. sun burns them down.
Good luck, can't say I agree with your choice of glass installer. Find a local shop that the owner works in himself, they are going to do the job right. My face and my name and my families worth is on every job I do and I take great care to make sure every car is better than factory isntallation. Big shops hire whoever they can get, some good, some bad. Hate to think your hard to find window was installed by a guy who will be fired tomorrow for doing poor quality work.

Good luck. If you find one and want to make the drive, I would use you right and the job would be done correctly.

Great.

Ford discontinued the rear window in my Mark VIII last year, they are impossible to find also.

I figured I was set with the SHO, as so many Tauri were produced it would never be discontinued. Guess not.

When I was looking last year to get my window cut out and resealed, the shops in this area advised me that I'd be looking at around 900 dollars to replace the rear glass if it happened to shatter during the removal process, and could obviously not guarantee that it would not shatter while being cut out. I paid 300 bucks for my atx, and 800 for my mtx, I was not willing to pay more than the car is worth for a piece of glass.

I was quoted $900 from safelight. They has to special cut it. the best way is to find one from a junkyard for $50 and have someone install it for $125.

I had new REAR glass put in my 91+ here two years ago for about $350. I understand you guys are talking about GEN II but thought that may be of interest.

On the flip side I am parting out a 92mtx that has good rear glass...If you come remove it you can have it. :)

Well I still have good rear glass, both of my cars are leaking around the top edge of the rear windshield. I've now had 4 gen IIs and 3 of the 4 have leaked around the rear windshield, and the 4th car I only had for 3 months so maybe it leaked too. Just not sure if having it cut out and resealed is worth the risk of the glass shattering during the removal process. My first SHO I lived in Mass at the time and had glass insurance coverage.....

Like everything else on a SHO, you have to learn how to do it, and do it yourself.
Thank God they are the same as a regular Taurus, but even they are getting hard to find.
