Rear valve cover

I had a real hard time getting it out, but when it came time to pop it back in, it went in real easy with just me installing it. Perhaps I had just pushed enough stuff out of the way and it just slid right in.

I used string and tied the wiring harnesses back, and anything else that was in the way..fuel lines...ect. Installed by myself, went fine, no leaks.

Once everything is out of the way, just wiggle it out of there. If you got the whole intake off, takeing the cover off should be a piece of cake!

Easiest way is to remove the back pass-thru bolt on the fuel rail banjo & flip the banjo upright. The remove one of the heater hoses from the firewall side. Cover comes off with no wiggling, frigging, digging, suffering, or pretty much any other "ing". Works for me week in & week out. wink

Have a paper towel or two ready to catch the fuel when you crack the bolt open on the rail.

One of the keys is to get the thick wiring harness on the front of the engine out of the way with tie wraps, string or a second person's hands. You can also remove the clamp from the heater hose and get a bit more cleanance. It is more of a challenge in proper positioning to get the cover back without dragging the seal across the timing chain.

After getting the valve cover back into place, use a mirror and flashlight to visually confim that the seal is still in the groove at the rear of the cover. It is easier to see the other three sides with a slight lift of the cover, but it is critical to verify the seal is properly positioned on the rear edge of the cover before snugging down those bolts.

From my Valve Gapping procedure:

40. Install the spark plug well seals (if replaced) and valve cover seals into the valve covers.

41. Clean the area of the head where the valve cover's seals contact with a rag and intake cleaner.

42. Remove the four spots of silicone from the left seal area of the head for each head. Take note of these locations.

43. Apply a small amount of oxygen sensor safe silicone (ex. Permatex Ultra Gray) to the four spots noted in the last step. These locations are the right angles where the camshaft penetrations and the front exhaust cam's rubber plug are located on the left edge of the valve cover sealing area on the head.

44. Important: Remove the four plugs from the oil drain holes at the lower corners of the heads.

45. Install the valve covers. It is best to install the front bank valve cover first so as not to reach across the open front bank to install the rear cover. Be careful that the seal stays in the grooves in the valve covers. This is very important on the rear valve cover since the interference and visibility make it more difficult to install.

46. Install the valve cover bolts and washers (place the best looking bolts on the forward valve cover) and carefully torque them to 8-11 lb-ft (96-132 lb-in). DO NOT over torque the valve cover bolts. This can result in the either the bolts shearing or the aluminum threads in the head stripping. Neither is desirable.
