I am thinking about trying to change the rear main seal on my 91 SHO. I am putting a new tranny in it and I thought that it would be a good time to change it.
Could you give any input on how to go about it.
What are the steps that I need to take to do this.
Any info would be appreciated.

well if you havent done your 60k you should do them together. youll need to take off the crank pulley. its not alltogether that hard but time consuming. with the crank pulley off you should do the cps and water pump and timing belt while youre in there. theres a whole wealth of posts on how to do this, but i highly recommend getting mark nunanlly's 60k video since thats included. but basically youll need to remove the crank pulley, the timing covers and one or two other things i think.

then youll be best off putting a wood screw into the seal on both sides of the crank and using pliers to pull it out. putting the new one on is the easy part wink all you need to do is **** up the sides, align it, and use a piece of pvc piping about the same diamter with a block of wood on top of it and hammer it into place. ask if you need to know more!

Since the tranny is to be out, you will NEVER have a better opportunity to replace it.

As a matter of opinion, it would be foolish to NOT replace it at this time.

chiltons says:

remove transaxle.

remove flywheel and cover plate.

punch hole into rear oil seal metal surface betwen seal lip and cylinder block.

use lockpin remover T78P-3504N to remove seal from retainer.

to install:
coat seal and lip with oil.

using a rear crankshaft seal replacer T81P-6701-A, install new seal. tighten bolts on installer tool evenly.

install flywheel, tighten nuts to 51-58 ft-lbs of torque.

install transaxle.

Thank you for your advice. I think I should do a 60K since my car has 130K on it and I don't know what maintenance has been done to it. Do you know where I can get a good manual to explain to me the procedures. I also heard that you need shims to adjust the valves. Do you know where I could find them.
Thanks Again

just done that my self, I just put a new tranny in mine, and put a new rear main seal in and while I was there I put a new clutch in and over sized throw-out bearing, pressure plate, and axle seals and let me tell you how much FUN I had (wink...wink). took me a total of about 13 hours using a lift and it sucked, first time i've ever done anything like that before by myself.
well good luck man

Exactly. Planning to do the same myself: clutch, throwout bearing, fork, pivot shaft bushings, rear main seal, trans blocking rings, seals and a few bearings.

Out of curiosity, are these oil seal tools for the rear-main easy to acquire? If not, what can you use in place of them to pull and install the seal? I'm about to do the clutch on Joy's car since the pedal vibrates badly (bolts not loctited properly most likely) and its starting to make noises when the pedal is in :( Hopefully it hasn't caused any other damage, as the '94 is "decommissioned until fixed". As soon as I first heard the noise, I drove it home and that was the end of that.

The exact tools are't even needed.

To remove, punch or drill a small hole into the body of the seal without scratching either the crank or the block. Insert a small (#4) machine or wood screw into the hole, give it a turn or two, then use pliers to pull the seal out.

To reinstall, **** the inner and outer surfaces of the seal with oil, then push it into place on the crank and into the block. Thumb or finger pressure is usually enough.

Once the screws are threaded into the rear crank seal, it is easier to remove the seal using hammer claws.

And since you are there, replace the rear crank seal carrier gasket also. It requires removing several screws.

All very good advice. Along the it's already apart theme-check out the clutch condition and check the flywheel surface for regrinding. You may want to hunt around for a used factory shop manual to help with all the procedures you have coming up. Look for Russ McCoy (sp?) he had several he was selling a few months ago.
