I'm havin' my new tranny installed and some people have suggested that I have the rear main seal replaced while the engine is out.

1) Where can I get the rear main seal and how much does it cost? I can't find one from the SHOShop, Midwest SHO, FPS, etc....

2) What's involved in replacin' it if the engine is already gonna be out and about what might it cost?

3) Anything else I should have replaced while the engine is out??....

I don't know how much or if it's available from SNP, but at O'Reilly's it's like $33.99. National-part # 710219

It takes no longer than a minute to swap them out. Might as well do it while your there if it's never been replaced lately.

Edit: When looking them up they both applied as the same part # for the 3.0 and 3.2. If that's a mistake, someone chime in so he doesn't buy the wrong part. I'd think they're the same though, too.

Maybe more than a minute. It depends how much trouble you have getting the old one out. Try the drill and screw method.

Rear main's a piece of cake. It's the carrier gasket that usually takes the time.

Here's the Ford part number off of SHOnut's website: F0DZ-6701-A $19.95 Ford retail is $22.17. I also highly reconmmend replacing the rear seal because it's almost no extra labor while the tranny is out. If it starts leaking later, you have to pull the tranny again.

Other stuff to consider that involves no extra labor:

-axles
-ball joints, tie rods
-sub-frame bushings
-struts/springs
-y-pipe

I'm not saying you have to replace all that, but if any of them looks questionable, now is the time to do it.

So the carrier gasket is not a common or soon to be leak item? Just wondering as he has an ATX and I have one too and being an ATX, it's more and likely to be dropped less amount of times compared to the clutch with the MTX.

If you change the carrier gasket there are pro's and con's. Pro's are is rear main seal should come out with the carrier plate when you remove it. Another pro you have a new carrier plate gasket. Con's you might disturb one of the oil pan gaskets pulling it out and might have to replace that down the road. Best bet while having everything out would be to change the rear main seal and the carrier gasket. Worst case senario is the oil pan gasket leaks later and you just pull the y-pipe and oil pan to change the gasket.

OK I got the rear main seal but the dealership doesn't have the carrrier gasket in stock and the tranny goes in on Thurs. Do I really need it?? I guess I can call around and see if any other dealerships around here have it.

Should I also replace my VSS too????

From what I remember, the VSS can be replaced with the tranny installed. I wouldn't, IMO, if it's working. It might be new, but what if the original lasts longer and the new one goes in another 10k miles. Just the way I look at electrical things. shrug

If you disturb the rear carrier trying to get the rear main out, then yes, you definitely need to replace the carrier gasket. Have Torrie at FPN overnight one if necessary. Dealer should also be able to get you one in a day turnaround.

Change the VSS, My God I hope I'm not too late!

It has been rumored to be changable with the tranny in the car laughing (right). The part is 21-24 dollars, and zero labor to change it with the tranny out.

For the love of SHO, change it.

half-way there, I think.
I wouldn't worry about the carrier gasket unless it's already been removed. I replaced mine when I did all the machine work on my car and I only found it at Shonut.

If the rear seal dosen't leak leave it undisturbed. If you do you will find that the oil seal carrier plate & gasket are a sonofabitch to remove. It would also be easy to distort the carrier plate wwhen prying it loose. It would be better spent on the oil pan gaskets which are the usual source of rear oil leak.
