Hey guys. I'm doing the 96+ upgrade on the front and I'm wondering if I can use my old front rotors, pads, and calipers on the rear? Has anyone done this or if not what have you done?

There's supposedly a brake upgrade for the rear which is shrouded in secrecy... I've seen pictures on someone's webpage of the setup.

Yes, it's doable. There are several thing you need, depending on the year of your car. The Gen I's had vented rear rotors, so if you have a GenII, you need to get the rear caliper mounting brackets for a GenI. You'll also need calipers and longer slider pins from a GenI. The hub is smaller in the rear than the front, so you also need an insert to make the 96 rotor 'smaller' in the middle so that it'll center over the hub. You also need a 'adapter". The adapter attaches to the knuckle and the caliper mounting bracket attaches to the spacer. This is what pushes the caliper further away from the hub to make room for the larger rotor. Here are pictures.......

I could tell you where I got the parts, but I'd have to **** you. Sorry. :) Seriously, there are potential liability concerns from the supplier, so things are low key right now. Not sure about what may happen in the future though....

by the look of the pictures, 16" rims will not clear this upgrade. Is that true?
Sure they will - this is essentially a 96 brake upgrade, but for the rear.

The pix aren't from my car, but I've got the parts. I'm going to run these in the rear and 13" Cobra 2-pistons up front.

stupid question, but wouldn't the setup work better if the caliper was to the front of the rotor?

Why would it make a difference? The location of the brake caliper in a disc system is set by the geometry and location of the suspension componenents.

The '96 upgrade is doable as Kurt said, I have installed one myself. Putting the factory front '94-'95 rotors and calipers on the rear will not work, however.

I dunno, I just figured that with the caliper at the front of the rotor it would be easier to stop for some reason....

Kurt.. when's the liability concern going to be addressed? I know that there are much greater potential troubles in brake upgrades that go awry over, say, engine upgrades since stopping is of greater concern.. but anything that a person does to their own car is done at their own risk. Is it more of a "this stuff could be REALLY dangerous because it's new" issue or a general "if not done right, someone could get hurt" issue?

Yes it can easily be done,i`ve seen it before. You do need a spacer ring for the hub to fit the front rotors on the rear though.I believe it does clear the stock slicers.FWIW,my buddy(TOMW)has the Cobra 13" brakes on the front AND rear,it`s an awesome set up,and suprizingly simple.

If you want to keep the parking brake, the 11.6" '96+ SHO rotor rear upgrade works well. DeaconBlue has it on his car, and it offers very well balanced stopping with his 13" front brakes.

Of course the cost is really not low and it is more of a cosmetic upgrade than anything else since the rear brakes don't work particularly hard.

The liability issue with the supplier (to remain unnamed) is that they don't want people who don't know what they're doing to screw up their brake bias to the point that the car won't be safe in a panic situation. They are selling a product which facilitates this modification, and if someone hurts themselves there is the chance that they could get sued.

What does it take to do the rear brake upgrade?

'90-93 stock rear calipers, pads and mounting brakets
'96-99 11.6" front rotors
hub centeric rings to fit 11.6" rotors on rear hub
custom caliper mounting bracket to hub adapters

John V.is correct, the smaller '94-95 10.9" front rotors will not work because of bracket mounting interferance problems. Also please note that this setup adds 11 lbs of unsprung weight to EACH rear corner of the '93-99 SHO's (not sure about the additional unsprung weight for the '90-92 SHO's).

This upgrade should only be done if you have upgrade your front brakes BEYOND the '96 11.6" setup to something like the Baer/PBR 12.0", 12.5" or 13.0" setup or the TCE SHO stopper 12.2" or 13.0" kits. If all you have is the '96 11.6" front upgrade (or stock for the Gen III), do NOT bother with trying to upgrade the rear brakes.

What was the deal with the hub centeric rings, and custom machined caliper mounting brackets?
Were those ever going to be sold? You may have mentioned this before, but I have not browsed in a while.

As noted before the unnamed vendor has still not got his ducks in a row involving the limitied liability issue, maybe someday soon... hopefully.
