OK, I've already gone out and researched this problem on SHOtimes and searched the SHOForum archives. However, my problem appears to be different from everyone elses.

Here's my problem. My rear brakes squeel like crazy, and they get progressively louder the longer I drive the car.

The brakes are probably disengaging, as far as I can tell. The car doesn't feel like it's "dragging," nor do my rear wheels get covered in brake dust.

Could it just be that I need new rear brake pads, or is that too easy of a solution?

Actually, I just took a better look at them, and both of the rear rotors have big, circular gouges in them. What the **** does that mean?

The pads usually have a warning tab that gradually rubs against the rotors to let you know it's time to replace them. Maybe the grove you're seeing is just that.
Looks like it's time for new pads (and unfortunately, new rotors).

It means you need new rotors and pads. You can have the rotors checked at a machine shop, maybe they can be salvaged.

Have the calipers inspected by someone who knows what to look for. You might need them also along with brake lines.

It depends on if they're just worn out from age and usage or if the failure is premature.

It seems as if these are the original brake pads. They're rusted to the caliper, for godsakes!

As far as the groove goes, I don't think the rotors are salvagable. It's a rounded groove, about 1/2" wide, and 1/4" deep.
