a lot of these newer Ford engines are very sensitive to oil drainback from the oil filter and it is very strongly recommended to only use a Motorcraft filter.

I have a new report that Ford just published comparing oil filters (they cut open a bunch) and only the Motorcraft one has a decent anti-drainback valve. I just gotta remember to email it to my home computer so I can post it...

Any other filter will give you a lot more clatter at startup until the oil pressure comes up. (which seems to take a week while you are listening to your fancy engine rattle away...)

Love to see that report rubydist! I've fought the temptation to "upgrade" my filter and have stuck with the Motorcraft. I did go Motorcraft full synthetic at 500 miles and change about every 4K.

i do believe i have the motorcraft one cause i just ask for mobil1 oil when i get the works done pretty sure it was on bill but id have to look to confirm. I always heard to stick to stock filters. its not like till its warm just like 5-6 rattle sounds then its gone when its like overnight cold then like 1-2-3-4 times for when its warmed up sometimes its fine when its warm.

I know at least 1 SHO owner didn't have that startup rattle go away (even with Motorcraft filter) until they used the PUP synth. So there might be a small percentage of cars that require a special diet.

I really hate that startup sound.. Just because people look at you weird like your engine is toast and falling apart... I tell people that its just the cold turbos starting to spin.

The Fram filters (which some people have nothing good to say) have the check valve (drain back). I took a look at the box and it has 3 different grades of filters, they all have check valves, but the material of construction varies.

What is that about? You would think that one would be enough. Either it works or it doesn't.
