I did in the '97 I used to have. It wasn't pretty. You'll probably need a hide away head unit. Something like what a classic car with aftermarket head unit might have to keep the dash looking original. The oem radio face is integrated into the hvac panel and the contour of the dash doesn't lend to cutting a hole and adding a more boxy aftermarket one. The actual radio functions are mostly in a unit in the trunk. I put an aftermarket one in the storage pocket below the radio/hvac football, fore of the shifter. It looked terrible but I wasn't willing to invest a ton of time fabricating an esthetically pleasing one off in there. The spacing there isn't that great either.

Ha. No there are quality hide away units with remote control that will play several sources of music/radio. This would be my move if I had another GenIII. I wired around the radio direct to speakers and had great sound.. just the install I did looked like as s. I was working alot and had all the fiberglass fab up stuff but time was tight and after a while I didn't care to do it. Install out of sight with remote and have everything you want.

Crutchfield has a less than perfect for our cars DIN rail adapter plate that might make a good starting point for one with reasonable modeling skills.

The only part that can be used is the rail and the hole for the stereo. The A/C controls are for a manual. There is a forum message about someone hacking the electronics and fitting a head unit. They noted it was a lot of work.

Another had started down the road of re-wiring the RCC controller to be managed from their own board. I am not sure how far they got.

Lastly there is an Arduino project that was started many moons ago to allow interfacing with the Ford Communications and send control messages over the network.
