When replacing the rod bearings, should I plan on replacing the main bearings as well? Or are the mains something that is best done with the crankshaft pulled? with 165,000 miles, I'm thinking they're at least worth looking at since I"m pretty sure my rod bearings are toast.

Best be done with the crankshaft pulled. How do you know the RBs are toast? Is she knocking?

No, she wasn't knocking that I could hear, but I lost enough oil pressure that the red light came on, so the car's parked. The car's got 165k miles on it and I'm sure they've never been done, so I'm going to change them and see if that doesn't solve the problem. I know there's a couple other things to check, but the bearings are my first suspect.

(With a little luck, my crank isn't scored)

I have heard of someone changing the mains with the crank in the car but its going to be a PITA. If your really that worried about them just pull off a cover and take a look and see what they look like then decide. Our mains are pretty tough unlike the rod bearings.

That's the kind of info I was needing... I'll just skip them for now, then. And if my crank ends up scored, then I'll swap those out on the replacement engine before installing. Thanks!
