Quick air filter question!

Do air filters for a Gen 3 fit all years? I was looking up some on eBay and there was different filters listed for 98 and 99 compared to 96 and 97. The 98-99 ones had two little tabs on one end, the 96-97 ones didn't.
Anyone know if a filter for a 97 will fit any year 96 to 99? Thanks!!

Also, will they fit other cars besides a SHO? Is the V6 Taurus and Sable the same size filter?
