I just picked up a 89 SHO w/111K on the clock and it has a gouge on the front intake where it says SHO...I have another SHO with a cleaner intake that I would like to swap. Here is the question(s)

1. What is involved in swaping the front intake, I'm guessin' its just you loosen a few nuts/bolts and you can just swap them...but I want to make sure I'm not getting my self into something that I shouldn't.

2. What is involved in swaping the hood mat thing. Again, I'm guessin you just pop the plastic pieces out and swap them.

Any help and or input is always appreciated! Thanks!

Swapping the intake is easy, justmake sure neither car has EGR. Then you just loosen everything, make sure you get the coolant lines below the throttle body and IAC, and you should be set. A quick search on "Intake removal" should net all your answers.

the hood pad is just a matter of popping those little black things out, and swapping it over.

It`s a bit tricky disassembling the entire intake manifold the 1st time,it`s like a puzzle. It`s also possible that you could damage the gaskets(they like to stick). If you want to swap it out,let me know and i can come over and walk you thru it.

I don't want to swap the WHOLE THING...just the front part that says SHO DOHC or whatever...I don't think there are any gaskets involved there is there????

JT, do you know anything about re-moving/replacing front driver side fender. I want to take one from my original SHO and stick it on the new one, the new one has a dent and the guy at the local body shop said it would be better if I could use an original fender. I want to do this stuff this weekend. Let me know if you can come out. I live about a half hour from greece in a little whole in the world called Albion. I can't pay you right now though, I'm a little tight on cash for the next few weeks.

Damn... you're making matters more difficult for yourself! I think the entire manifold needs to be removed either way to do what you want. Once you get it off, it's just bolts and vacuum lines I think. There are 2 bolts that hold the manifold down on the left side near the DIS. There are maybe 12 bolts that connect the manifold to the head. There are 5 other support bolts that go from the head to the manifold. 2 on the front, 2 on the back, and 1 on the side. YOu will also need to unbolt the throttle body and be careful not to damage the throttle body gasket, all the throttle body linkage, and the TPS. With practice, removing the manifold takes under a half hour. THe first time it should take maybe an hour because you should be careful not to mess anything up. If you're going to go through the process of removing the manifold just for a nick in it, why not do the upper 60k and check the valve clearance? After all... it is an 89.

Yeah, sorry Joe but you will have to remove the whole intake. You can't reach the bottom bolts to simply remove SHO part of the intake. You will most likely ruin the crossover tube gasket which is paper, so you need to have a gasket set on hand.

U'll need at the minimum the gasket that connects the secondaries to the front plenum. Also have the black intake gaskets on hand for the intake to head fitting. You can reuse the ones you have if the black gasket material is still intaked.

Joe,

Do you know why there is a "gouge" in the intake of your new SHO engine? You mentioned that you also want to replace the hood pad, so I'm getting the feeling that the intake has worn from contact with the hood pad. All I'm thinking is that if you're putting an unblemished intake on now, it won't be long before it is worn as well if you don't fix what's causing the wear. Engine mounts? SFBs?

Just a thought... and feel free to ignore this post if you've already addressed the wear issue... good luck!

IMHO the best thing to do would be to take the intake that you want to put on and take it completly apart and clean it first. Put new gaskets in (there cheap) and then put it on your new SHO. Then you will have a nice clean intake inside and out.

Previous owner (LL Cool A AKA Alex) replaced the tranny/motor mounts and installed new frond SFB's.

Okay, name all gaskets/seals that I might as well replace since I'll be doing all this fun stuff. I figure I will replace plugs/wires as well...If JT wants to help me adjust the valves, I might as well do that too. JT-its gonna take me about a month and a half to come up with fundage required to do this...First I gotta replace/paint the fender, then install a new halfshaft that Alex so kindly gave to me...then maint. stuff. If I'm gonna do it, might as well do it right!

Okay, I'm checking out MIDWEST SHO's maint. packages...anyone have any experience with AutoLite Plugs? Do they fit correctly? Am I better off getting MotorCraft Double Platinum ones? What about the wires from MIDWEST SHO? Thanks!

When this started happening to my intake, I realized it was a motor mount issue. This has been long taken car of and that mark is not getting any larger since I replaced ALL motor mounts and the rear 2 subframe bushings along with the clutch. So yes, Joe's problem has already been solved...now he just wants to replace that lower part of the intake to make it look minty thumb

I doubt anybody would recommend using autolite plugs. The only plugs you should use are the motorcraft oem factory plugs (AGSP32PP). Below are places where you can get parts cheap. I took the information from a well respected SHO owner named Sdpatt that frequents the shoforum. GOod luck with everything, and don't forget to take your time and be careful.
