Measure the tread depth on your remaining tires. From our cars manual: "
It is recommended that the two front tires or two rear tires generally be
replaced as a pair."

If you are looking for someone to tell you it is OK to replace just one, you probably are not going to hear that from a professional, unless your tires are within spec. That being said, I replaced 1 tire at 20,000 miles and had no problems for the last 90,000 miles. The tread difference was about 1/16"

In General: Why You Need to Replace All Four AWD Tires
  • Mismatched tires are often a primary factor in drivetrain damage.
  • To minimize variances, always match tires: same brand, size and type.
  • The tread depth difference between front and rear tires should be no more than 3/32nds of an inch.
"There is no pat answer for all cars, so the best thing to do would be to check the owner's manual. As an example, we had a Chrysler Pacifica AWD in and we checked it's owner's manual, it simply stated that all four tires had to be the same size. That is definitely more forgiving than Subaru or Audi, but again, different vehicles will be different. We've seen other vehicles whose owner's manual did say that all four tires had to replaced at the same time, so it's best to do your homework and avoid costly repairs."

In regard to tires, what do we do for a spare? I was told the 20" rim does not fit in trunk so we have no spare tire. With such a huge trunk I think it may be because they want to replace two at a time, but what do we do if we get a flat?

The reason a full size spare doesn't fit is mainly depth. The spare tire well is cut too shallow to allow much more than about 17-18" in there. When I had the SEL with 19's the tire would fit in the well. The problem came in the carpet cover it would not go flush. The well would only take about 1/2 of the tire depth wise. I believe the problem with the SHO or any Taurus with 20" is width.

The only way I can think of to correct this problem is 1. work with the existing temp spare or 2 Very extreme...

Cut the tire well and insert a sleeve that is deeper than the existing well. Yes I have been watching too much Power Nation!!

You're on point with what you're saying, but it's the width of the rim, not the height (and obviously the tire width/height) . You could probably shove a 24" rim in there if the overall tire diameter matches the spare, but since the width is most likely greater than the spare, it'll prevent the cover from sitting flush like you said.
