One of my biggest fears on my 13 SHO is the audio system based on problems we had in the fleet. Fast forward, I work with a lady that has a 2012 Edge, out of warranty, and the dealer wants $1100 to replace the APIM (module that bolts to the back of the screen). I know that they can be had on Ebay or from LKQ used.
My question is, would a used APIM be a plug and play item or would it require programming or possibly lock out if it stores the VIN. I only deal with new parts in the fleet. Replacement is a piece of cake and the part from LKQ is a fraction of the cost of a new part. Does anyone know if there are any pitfalls in replacing with a used APIM?

Yup, several years and models extended out to 5 years on Ford and 6 years on Lincoln. Unfortunately the Edge is a 2012 and extended warranty ssm expired on it in May. FOMCO won't work with them on an extended basis. I know a new APIM requires programming, but I don't know and can't find anything in PTS related to installing a used part.

From my experience sync is sync across the model limes. As long as you get a navigation or non navigation to replace what is already there it should work? There are companies that have kits out there to put nav on non nav vehicles. When they go to the dealership for an update it wipes out the navigation. I have seen this.

The thing I can not for sure comment on, like you suspect, is if the C.A.N. messages are different between models. The update should table care of features.

I guess you could call L.K.Q. and ask?
