Pulled the codes for the first time on my '95 today and got a few back.

158 (O,R,M) MAF sensor is/was high or short to power - MAF, I've got a new one on it's way, that's taken care of.

538 (R) System did not receive "goose" test, I'm not too sure what this one means...

638 (O,M) TOT sensor is/was low or grounded - Transmissions, this one has me worried the most because it deals with the tranny. What is the TOT sensor?

Like I said I'm replacing the MAF, but I'm also going to go ahead and replace the TPS, crank sensor, and IAC. Car is getting around 12mpg in town and is underpowered. Hopefully replacing these things will help clear it up.

The "goose" test is part of what's performed during a KOER. At a certain point, you're supposed to floor the accelerator pedal briefly.

TOT is the transmission oil temp sensor.

So could his bad MAF be causing him to get such poor gas mileage? I could see that being an issue if the computer does not know how much air/fuel mixture needs to be introduced into the engine.

He just replaced both O2 sensors BTW.

A bad MAF most definitely will cause bad fuel mileage. Looking at these codes again, it looks like it's telling you that the MAF is getting too high of a voltage, or the power circuit is shorted. I suppose that could be a bad MAF, but has anyone checked voltage with a meter? IIRC it should be 5v.

The TOT code may also cause the converter to not lock up, because the computer constantly thinks the fluid is too cold. Well, I think that's the way it works, I haven't done too much work on ATX cars.

yes, the tot code will result in no converter lockup, ever. this is bad for several reasons, so its worth digging into and finding out what is wrong. start with disconnecting the large connector on top of the trans, by where the shift cable attaches. clean up that connector and make sure all contacts are good. then reset codes and see what reappears. you may need to change the actual sensor, which is in the trans under the cover on the left end of the trans. you can get this done w/o pulling the trans - its not any fun, but I've done it.

Sounds to me like a new MAF and TOT will take care of the majority of the problems I'm having. Thanks guys!
