What did/do you guys about not having a spare tire ? I realize there is a sealant “kit” but that won’t help if, god forbid, the tire gets shredded. Anybody buy a single rim (any size) and tire and throw it in the trunk?

Ideally I would like to buy an inexpensive set of winter rims/tires but I’ll make that decision next winter.

Thanks!

Pretty sure you can get a spare tire and jack from a junkyard and it'll fit.

For my 2015 I bought a rim from a wrecked police interceptor and then bought a tire, when mounted to that rim, closely matched the diameter of the stock tire/wheel. It fit the wheel well in the trunk, but you have to deep six the factory insert that covers the well . We did a test fit and it was all good.

I found out the TPMS light comes on after the tire looses about 10psi. That gave me a heads up before my tire was damaged allowing me to plug the tire untill I could get a proper repair performed.

This doesn' help unless you have a plug kit. The slime in the kit ruins the TPMS sensor. So in addtion to a tire that is no longer repairble you have a sensor that needs to be replaced too.

You are correct, use of the inflator kit will render the TPMS sensor inoperative. It also coats the inside of the tire (obviously) which I am told can render the tire unrepairable. Even if the puncture is minor and ordinarily could be repaired, I am told that the sealant inside the tire will frequently prevent proper balancing of the tire/wheel assembly after a repair. As you correctly pointed out, the inflator kit only helps you if the loss of air is related to a breach in the tire the sealant can effectively seal. If there is a catastrophic tire failure, you're stuck. Given the amount of time I drive in rural and mountain areas of the state, the fitment of full size wheel and spare seemed the only way to have some peace of mind I would not be stranded.

You can use it just to fill the tire back up with air after plugging it. The kits are cheap and work fine but I would recommend pliers to help get the nail/screw/etc our and snips to cut of the end of the plug that sticks out when you’re done.

I've had my car for 4 years now and never had an issue - and trust me, I live in Pothole city in the Winter months!!! I'm just very aware of the road I'm traveling on and always scanning down-road to see what to avoid! Unfortunately at faster speeds and if a car is in front of me it's hard to react in time and I've hit a few craters! Never blew the tire or bent the rim, etc.

I once ran over a piece of flashing (sheet of aluminum from a roof) with a nail in it. The nail didn't stay in the hole, and left a 1/8" hole in the tire. Filled it with the sealant, and it didn't seal, so ran home before it went flat again. Plugged it, it was fine for a long time after that.

Moral to the story, the sealant won't fill a hole that a nail/screw has vacated :)

AAA. 4 FREE tows a year, nuff said
At the price of AAA for towing, you have to have your car towed more than once a year to break even. You're better off to save your AAA money and pay for a tow when needed. In my 20 years of driving (and I drive older vehicles as DD) I've only been stranded and needed towed twice.

On topic, I hate how Ford has gone to this no spare tire crap. Like noted earlier, anything more than a minor puncture and even the kit they provide is worthless. What could have been a quick 15 minute flat change (plus replacement tire) turns into a tow, new tire, and new TPMS costs. It takes more time to get running again and now costs substantially more. For a vehicle with as big of a trunk as the Taurus, there's no reason they cannot fit a full sized spare in the trunk even with larger brakes.

You can thank the previous administration's EPA and their fuel mileage guidelines. Those air pump kits are supposed to save weight to help increase fuel mileage on certain vehicles. The same option is available on the Focus, Fiesta, Mustang, Fusion, CMax, and a couple other models.

Maybe its just my bad luck with cars, but I've had my various vehicles towed a ton of times. AAA is like owning a gun. Better to have it and not need than to not have it and need it. That said I've had the SHO towed twice already (fuel pump module failure and rip in sidewall) so its already payed for itself. Not to mention I get free jumps anywhere, free gas if I'm out, and a ton of discounts. And its only $75 a year for me. Thats about $6 a month. I spend more than that on the occasional energy drinks here and there.

The thing I like most about this Forum is that everyone gets along so well, we work together to help one another out and for the most part leave our personal political leanings to other forums. Lets be honest in today's world if we brought politics into this forum, most of us would stop talking to each other. I don't know why the PP SHO does not have a spare tire but I think it has more to do with the 20 inch rims then anything. I'm not sure why you think building cars that get the best gas mileage possible is a bad thing BUT the whole purpose of the EcoBoost is V8 performance at V6 gas mileage, so if you are saying Obama is responsible for the EcoBoost then I have to say, Thanks Obama. To those of you who find what I just said offensive, I am sorry but sometimes I can't help myself, Good Day

I wasn't trying to be political. I was just telling you what our Ford rep told us when we asked them about the flat tire kits and why some vehicles didn't come with spares. I admit I should have said so in my post, and if I offended you, then I apologize, but profanity isn't needed!

Personally, I have only had a flat tire occur once on a car while driving. 99% of the issues are slow leaks. I say lighten it up and remove the spare when
driving locally. If going on an extended road trip, throw the spare/donut back in.

My understanding on the Mustang was that when you added the Brembo package you needed a larger wheel to fit over the brakes and that larger wheel wouldn't fit in the trunk. That makes sense because the Mustang trunk isn't the most roomy trunk (but they still should have made room IMO). It's not about it being a 20 inch rim. My non-PP SHO has 20 inch rims and a full sized spare in the trunk. On a vehicle as large as the Taurus there's no reason that space is the reason. I have updated with the 2013+ PP brakes and my 20" full sized spare still fits over the brakes. I have no idea why they decided to go with the fit a flat crap over a spare but it's one thing that bugs me about Fords decisions on new vehicles.

PS: I find it funny the hypocrisy of chastising someone over posting a semi-political post and then responding with your own semi-political post. *** meet kettle.

I really don't know why there is no spare tire in my SHO But I do know only the PP comes with out a spare, (I guess they figure we are all racing our PP an we bring a spare in the support truck). I also did not know the non-PP came with 20 inch rims so that has really confused me, is your spare a 20 inch spare have you checked.

Next on my to do list, was there any one major thing you can think of that I need to know, and did they take your pre-2013 calipers as a core.

LMAO Very good point an, the thought did cross my mind, (For the record I am naturally a very LOUD person, so I would actually be the kettle). Anyway As I was saying, it did cross my mind an you do have a point, However I was just pointing out, just one of the good things that have come out of improving MPG. As I said sometime I can't help myself. Have a great Sunday all.

-This got me thinking about spares again and I did the Google, I found a kit for a Mustang with everything including a 18 inch space saver spare. Do you guys think that will fit with the SHO brakes, Second question, if you have 20 inch tires an 18 inch spare will that screw up your AWD system/car. -
