My powersteering pump sounds like a supercharger, always whining. It's just annoying, the steering is fine, but for how long?

Mine did the same...I ran new fluid through it and it got better. Then once I got it cleaned out I filled it with full synthetic ATF and the whine is gone.

mine has been making noise for over a year now, I changed the fluid about six times and it will end up black and burnt within a day. No ill effects just the noise though. I have a new pump but I hear its a pita to change!

Are you sure its the pump? I had thought it was the p/s pump on my blue ATX, but in turn it was a lower idler pulley. I came to find that out when it decided it had enough and wanted to no longer be part of the engine. Boy was I glad I didnt put a new pump on right away, and i had about 10 extra idlers laying around.

That's why you keep changing it untill it stays red.....

Alright good, I will change the fluid several times. Synthetic ATF works?

Yeah, a new pump is $150 for a rebuilt one. And I hear it's the best one called a TC pump.

The Whine is getting worse! I changed the fluid twice and its still red, and full. It whines real bad at 2500 rpm then past 3000 rpm. I held the pedal at 2500 for a while and it got even worse. But the steering and fluid is all good.

What does a water pump sound like when its going out?

listen to topgunny. All you have to do is SLIGHTLY loosen the nut on the pully to see if the sound changes.

Okay, im gonna take the belts off and check to see if the pulleys spin without crunching or resistance. Also could be the timing chain I was told, so first thing's first belts are coming off. I will check the Phoenix Project, but does anyone have any tips to get those belts off?

You don't have to take the belts off. Check your idler pulleys. Loosen one at a time, VERY SLIGHTLY. start the car. If the noise has gone away or is less audible....then that pulley you loosened need a new bearing pressed in to it.

If you loosen one of them, Start the car and the noise does not go away.... then you'll know to go to the next one. Pretty simple!
