I was wondering how difficult these are to remove/install? It was confirmed by Ford that mine is leaking, enough to cause a burning PS fluid smell after a lot of driving. This is not a good thing. I have access to plenty of tools and mechanically inclined friends, although I would be doing most if not all of the work. If anyone has done this some feedback on how long it takes would be helpful.

PS I did a search and found a similar unanswered post, and a lot of information about steering rack pinch bolts

You may want to verify your pump is leaking, many times its the cam seal leaking just above the pump, even a seasoned tech can miss diagnois this. I recently replaced a cam seal that was allowing engine oil to leaking all over the pump, the owner had told me it was the power steering pump, but after interviewing him he told me that he has never had to add any P/S fluid. After installing a $8 dollar cam seal no more leak. Obvouisly it was engine oil not power steering fluid.

I changed the pump on my 91 SHO last november...

the manual calls for you to remove the rear motor mount and remove the pump from the underside.

I didn't find this way particularily attractive, as the motor mount bolts were more than solid in their place.

I removed the intake from the car, removed the pump pullie, remove the hoses connecting to the pump, then the front three bolts, and finally the last one at the back. The last bolt is the most challenging. It'll take some wrestling to remove the pump and install teh new one, but with some patience, it can be done.

The hardest part of it all was installing inlet/outlet lines to the pump..

If you have an ATX, I can only see this procedure being easier, as the enigne sits a good 2" forward in comparison to the MTX...

Thanks for the response. I have to admit it does smell like power steering fluid. Although I've got enough leaking seals that it might be others. I have changed power steering hoses before (return line) and noticed the smell of it burning on the cats. This smell is certainly similar to what I remember. It might be that burning PS fluid smells just like Oil. But I will double check it in any event.

Neat, I might just clean my intake while I'm at it. :)

So did you take it out the top? If so, can you clarify a bit on those procedures. Thanks
