Hello everyone,

I have a 1994 3.2 ATX. I recently changed the power steering pump. While I has at it I also did a full upper, lower, and front 60K on my SHO. I followed the instructions from this forum. They worked out extremely well! It took a while but the car runs beautifully and pulls hard! The car has 132K on the clock.
Anyway I am still getting smoke coming from the power steering pump area. It usually happens not at idle but when I take it out for a spin and come to a light/stop sign there is smoke coming from the passenger side. I changed all the cam seals as well. No oil is dripping from the CPS sensor. The power steering pump lines are dry! I have been checking the power steering fluid level routinely and that seems to be good. What gives! :braincramp:
Could the shaft on the pump be bad already? Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas or suggestions?

:thankyou:

Hi there, my son and I are new to the SHO family as he has just bought himself a 94 SHO, which we picked up yesterday. As a result, I'm afraid we don't have an answer to your questions but have a related question of our own.

We need to replace the power steering pressure hose and I was wondering how big a task that will be. Is it a question of simply getting in there and undoing the fittings, or are there any specific issues or difficulties we should be aware of?

Thanks,
Barry

pressure hose is not too difficult, just the fitting on each end. the hardest part is that there is barely room to get in there with a wrench, so it will take some time and likely result in scratched arms!

if the car smokes, a little oil is getting on the cats/exhaust manifold. this can come from the pressure fitting on the pump, the inlet fitting on the pump, the pump shaft seal, the rear cam seal, the valve cover gasket, the power steering reservoir, the hose fittings at the reservoir, etc. so you have to look carefully with a light to see where the oil is actually appearing at.

the rear cam seal is very difficult to get installed without damage unless you have the installation tool, so that would be a likely candidate for leak. the rear valve cover gasket is also difficult to get on without rolling it on the rear passenger corner, so that would also be a likely candidate. look carefully at those first, and then through the list above until you find it.

good luck!

I would check the valve cover gasket to make sure it is seated correctly and not leaking on the cats.

Thanks guys, though I believe it is clearly an issue with either the power steering pump or the hose as PS fluid goes right through the reservoir and spews out when the engine is running. I now know the meaning of armstrong steering. Looks like it is coming from the hose but I need to have a closer look as suggested.

If it is the hose I will need to order it from the US (I'm Canadian) as it does not seem to be available anywhere here in Canada. Where do you guys generally get your parts? It would seem carparts.com has a hose available...

Thanks,
Barry

I just bought a pressure hose, rock auto had them; napa, o'reilly, advance auto all could order them, none stocked one.
