I was wondering if changing the power steering pump in a 94 atx is a big job?? I guess the problem I am having is the pump, it seems to surge when i put pressure on the pump buy turning the steering wheel, the wheel wants to go back and forth in my hand.
The pump doesn't make a loud noise like normal ford pumps do on their way out, and it isn't leaking, but I cant think of anything else it would be but the pump.
Has anyone else had this problem? I would love it to be an easier fix.

Thanks

Rod

I have done a couple....On a scale of 1 to 10....I'd call it a 3.5 ... I remove the hose from the rack and remove it with the pump. you'll need a new nylon O ring...Put the O ring in some hot water to ease installation. thumbs_u

That effect you describe is caused by worn and leaking seals within the steering rack. You will find that remanufactured racks are quite reasonable in their cost, but not much fun to install. If faced with the task again, I would provide the rack to a shop and let them install it for the $150 that was quoted as a labor charge.

Welcome to the world of goofy Ford Steering.

As Scott said, it's in the rack. If you do replace the rack, I would suggest following all the tech tips at Cardone's site (www.cardone.com) on flushing, hose replacement, and filter installation. I didn't, and the goofy feedback steering problem reappeared very quickly.

Here is something interesting, I was checking out the rack to see how hard of a job it would to change (PITA) and the left hand side end has quite a bit of play in it moves in and out about 3/8 of an inch maybe more, that cant be right, can it?
I am beginning to hate this car and I don't have it registered yet.

In that case, you have a worn out inner tie rod. It can be replaced separately. New/remanufactured racks include this part.

Sounds like a lot of the wear items were neglected by the PO.
