ok i have some problems

1) my power steering always squeals, especially when cold? do i need a new belt or to be tightened? prices?

2) when it is cold i notice my car is tough to steer when it is not warmed up. perhaps power steering rack? prices?

3)when turning occasionally my car makes like a crunching type noise/old creaky door opening. what can that be? is it air passing though? my gf says it sounds like a boat when i turn.

thanks guys

First you need to tighten the belt. You must loosen the 14mm bolt through the center of the tensioner pulley then turn the 5mm Allen head bolt on the top of the tensioner in the CW direction. This Allen head bolt is a bugger to reach with anything other than the dedicated 18" long, T-handled Allen wrench.

A slipping belt could definitely cause hard steering problems. With the pump properly spinning, now you should check the fluid level.

The early SHOs were prone to a fluid resonance sound especially when turning right. This is more of an annoyance than a functional problem. The crunching noise may be the upper spring pad rubbing against the inside of the strut tower. Again, this is more of an annoyance than a functional problem, but it can be alleviated by applying some silicone grease (Sil-Glyde) to the areas of interference up inside the tower.

Ahoy matey,
Scott
