Has anyone tried another power steering fluid besides the Type F fluid that they recommend. The Type F tranny fluid has not been popular since 1977 and it is getting harder to find as time goes by.
Just wondering.

I installed a rack (ac/delco rebuilt) about 2 months ago. I finished up and realized the only ATF I had was Mobile1. I dug around the garage and found an old bottle of actual power steering fluid. I used it and it works great.

So you can add power steering fluid to the list of fluids for your power steering system.

I just flushed my power steering fluid. I asked the guys at Advanced Auto what I should use and they said to use power steering fluid. Anyone have issues using power steering fluid vs. ATF such as Mercon? The reason I concerned was the fluid color was red which means the old fluid was ATF I am assuming.

Ive got ATF in mine and really like it. Much smother feeling. The Power steering fluid that came out was black so i flushed it twice with ATF. But i bet if i went back to normal power steering fluid it would be just fine.

Reading all the power steering fluid threads makes my head hurt. Everyone has a different opinion...

I'm of the opinion that power steering fluid is uncolored Type F transmission fluid.

The power steering system, being much simpler and less dependent on friction modifiers than an automatic transmission, really shouldn't care about what specific type of ATF you put in. Consequently, logic dictates that you should be fine with whatever. I use Pennzoil ATF in the big jugs and it works great.

This.

I don't think anybody has had a power steering component failure as a result of using the wrong fluid. The PS system is much more forgiving than a transmission would be.

I've used Type F, regular mercon, and mercon v. Right now I have mobil 1 sythetic aft in there and the system seems to like it.

Just put in a good ATF or ps fluid and you will be fine.

Do you guys have an experience with the Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak? Not because of a leak, but my power steering has been a little noisy lately...

Any stop leak additive will gunk up any system.
I'd suggest a good oil flush. Most of the times it quiets the pump.
