My 90 sho: the antenna mast is gone but when you push the manual antenna buttons, you can hear the motor running. How do I get to it to find out what is working, what's not, and what I need to do to get it fixed?

Well if you can hear the motor working that is good. The mast line is a gear strip that is plastic with teeth and they are probably stripped. You can get to it really easy by removing the passenger side tire, then the inner fender wall. Then one screw (I think) and the whole thing comes out. Take it apart and look to see what the problem is. If it is the mast you can get a new one from SHONUT (see link on this website) and it takes 5 min to install. I did mine from start to finish in 10 mins.

You should be able to pull the mast right off of the motor once you remove the grommets that hold it to the main motor assembly. Regardless, I would suggest that you go ahead and remove the mast from the motor and then when it and the plastic strip attached to it come out, open the motor where the gearing winds up into it, chances are you will still have a bit of it left in there from where it broke off. If you try to put in a new antenna and part of the old is still left in there, you will proably break the plastic strip on the new antenna. Also, you can usualy find a replacement antenna at NAPA, Autozone, or O'Reilly's for A LOT cheaper ($25) than a dealer ($50). The antenna is the same one used on most Ford products. Good luck.

Well, I got it apart and the only thing I know for sure is that there is NO antenna left. But I am not sure what I am looking at besides that. I don't even know how the antenna would go in it!!! Can somebody talk to me like I'm a dummy, because I am one!!!!! What do I need to do??

When I broke mine off....going through some trees.

I got another one from a junk yard. If you can, go to pick and pull. That way you can pay extra and get a warrenty. If it doesn't work you can bring it back and get another...

I don't know how you'd go about fixing one...I couldn't figure it out either.

Thanks for the tips and info. I ordered a mast unit from shonut, about $40 shipping and all. It was toooooo easy, I couldn't believe it. All I had to do was feed the toothlike strip into the shaft (where the antenna comes out), and hit the manual "lower antenna" button. It fed itself into the unit, and NOW I HAVE A POWER ANTENNA!!!!!
What you guys don't understand is, this is up there with changing out a water pump or something. I'm a lot of things, but a mechanic is not one of them.
The hardest part of it all was to get the unit out from underneath the car to inspect it. That one screw drove me nuts. Until I figured out to use my drill. There is no room to use a socket wrench.
