Hello everyone,
My 92 MTX has a problem where it sounds like moderate popping noises in the exhaust system, around the resonator or mufflers. It also smells like gas pretty strong at the pipes, yet I am not getting any codes other than CODE 219, which I have gotten since I bought the car and will not go away. This "popping" problem is new and only seems noticeable at idle or very slow speed. Anyone have an idea? I bought the car 2 months ago and haven't done much to it yet except change the radiator, and it only has 91,000 miles.
Thanks!
_Randy

For the 219 code, look to the upper left hand corner of the engine bay right around the EEC diagnostic and ABS test connectors. You are looking for a two-wire connector that should have a gray rectangular jumper in it. It's below but not far from the two test connectors. If it's missing then there's your problem, unless you have a broken wire. As far as the 332 code, the passages in the intake are very likely carbon'd up.

Thanks Prophet, that is a good idea, I'll check it out, but do you think it could be cats or an O2 as well? It smells strongly like gas at the pipes, and I love the pic of your SHO!
Thanks as well Slo-SHO, I did check that spout connecter and the one below the coil pack and both tested out fine for continuity. I don't know what else it could be. On the EGR thing, I am thinking of just replacing the valve, it is only $22 at Kragen near me.

If the previous owner didn't change the O2's, then you should do it now as maintenance, but they wouldn't cause the popping. Bad cats would smell like bad beer farts, not gasoline. Another thing to check would be the donut gasket where the exhaust meets up with the Y pipe. That can pop, and sound like a backfire, unly you'd hear it from the middle of the car, not the tail.

thanks 91SHOplus, that is a great idea! It could be coming from the middle, so I will check that out. Does anybody have any experience dealing with code 219?
