Anbody know off hand what the weights are for a stock fiberglass SHO plus hood versus the Gen I stocker ? I prefer the looks of the plus over the Cincy SHO fiberglass hood.

Just what he said, I believe.

I also like the plus hood, but my car came with one. I havn't been in a Gen 1 without a plus hood but over all I think it adds a nice touch over the stock hood.

I found a plus hood on a non plus 91 in the junk yard. Carried on my head for half a mile. It's a lot lighter.

i'm pretty sure it shaves like 16-20 lbs off the weight of the car, but don't quote me on that - it sure feels lighter though - the plus needed one person to remove and re-apply... the non-plus hood took two people (we were trying very hard not to scratch the paint)

mine is a 91 non-plus with it and from my records it came with it... (i'm the third owner so i'm not completely sure if one of the two previous may have put it on)

My late build 1991 came the plus hood from the factory. I also lucked out with the rod shifter from the factory too.

It was available on the '91 Plus models(had a appearance package). It is made from fiberglass and has a "power buldge" in it. A few non plus models also have been found with the hood.

I believe the plus hood has best combination of looks and weight savings. I have a non-plus 91' that came with both the plus hood and rodshifter. It even came with the slicers having blank center caps.

My January 1991 issue SHO came with the fiberglas hood from the factory before the offering of the Plus option. The "story" was that there was a problem with separation of the fiberglas portion from the metal attachments or separation at the leading edge causing the hood to come loose that made Ford stop regular production of the hood. Then the Plus option came around.

The Plus hoods had a bit of a fatal manufacturing flaw, IMO.

In order to get the radio frequency noise supression of a metal hood, a layer of Aluminum foil was bonded to the underside of the hood substrate, then the underside stiffening frame was bonded to the Aluminum foil layer. At B&A, the foil gets connected to the body sheet metal with a ground strap, so there is now some EMI shielding between the engine and the radio antenna.

I've taken a few of the Plus hoods apart to make lightweight pin-on hoods, and the under-structure frequently pulls away quite easily from the hood sheet because the Aluminum foil lining loses bond with the sheet. Once the under-structure is out of the way, I'd peel off the remaining Aluminum foil in large sheets.

****, its' nothing a shitload of rivets wouldn't fix...

I've got weights of steel, Plus, and lightened Plus hoods at home, I'll edit this post and include them a bit later.

I weighed my collection of Plus hoods yesterday.

Ungutted, unmolested Plus = 40.4 pounds.

My gutted Plus = 27.4 pounds.
This hood is basically a skin: All the interior and side edge bracing is removed, the rear edge stiffener is removed, and all the reinforcement around the hinge plates is gone, but the hinge plates are still there. The forward edge reinforcing box and latch plate are intact. My eventual intention was to pull the hinge plates and just pin it at all four corners, so it would lift fully off. I'd planned to leave the forward edge stiffener and latch plate in place, and use the latch as a fifth pin, just to keep it from flapping.

Couldn't find steel hood weights, but I seem to recall that they're in the mid-50's, maybe near 60 with the insulation blanket.

Just a note on the ungutted Plus: The inside foil layer is bubbled and pulling away in large sheets, and many of the bond spots between the underside stiffening frame and the foil layer have pulled apart.

Mr. Morrell,

Have you seen the non-plus fiberglass hood with the script "Super high output" on the blanket?

I found one at the JY last month and as I was inspecting it, I noticed that the hood blanket has foil incorporated into it. I did not see ANY foil attached to the actual fiberglass. Is it possible that the brains at BudCo redesigned the hood after they learned that they were separating? If so, this begs the question...why did they go back to old foil lamenated design? Cost? Better glue?

I'll have to take another look at the hood and perhaps post some pics of what I'm talking about.
