I recently went to Discount tire for a flat repair. My tire would go low after about a couple days and I figured I had a leak in my tire. They told me that it was actually my wheel that had the leak. They said they had dunked it and it was bubbling from a tiny hole in the rim.

The wheels are going to be powdercoated but I'm not sure if that will seal the hole. Is there something else I should consider, a small weld maybe?

I agree with Chris, for this first problem, welding is fast and easy as a fix, but I would be concerned about these wheels at this point and I would want to get them xrayed for other flaws, faults, and stress problems.

If the pictures linked to in your sig are of the same wheels, they don't look like that have that much metal in them. I would be concerned that they probably are not rated for the weight of a SHO. These cars are porkers compared to most of the tuner cars that are consuming the wheel market. Quite possibly the pinhole leak is a blessing in disguise warning you before the wheel actually breaks on you (By the way that isn't a fun thing even at a slow speed as I can attest).

They are centerline RPMs. Just looked at the loead rating--1100lbs. Sounds like it's enough but is it? Also, where can you xray a wheel? What about a dye penetrant?

On a 3450 lb vehicle, likely with a couple of hundred pounds of passenger and maybe some luggage and such, that is a pretty low load number if you are doing anything past normal driving. You are very likely to exceed that in hard cornering or even on a winding back road taken at any real speed.

Years and years ago I talked to a welder I worked with about adding some material to the edge of a wheel that had a curb scrape and he wouldn't do it because he said the heat from the weld would change the properties of the metal in that area.

They were junk wheels so I didn't pursue the matter any further.

Of course it could also be that he was just too lazy or might not have known what he was doing...

I found the hole or crack rather. It's a little less than 1 inch long on the inner portion of the wheel. I will dismount it today to see what that amounts to on the inside. Hopefully, it can be weldes and all it well...just no more powerslides.

Nick,

We can run it over to Troy at Modern Auto and see if he will TIG it for you. He is an excellent welder, and will know if it will affect anything.

That wheel has too low of a load rating for the Gen 3. You will contnually have problems due to cracking. You need one that is at least 1300 lbs.
