Pinch Welds

For the ones that have put their 2010's on lifts did you notice if they used a special fitted v block on the pinch welded jacking points?

I can see where this could cause some issues with the sheet metal carrying the load especially when using one jack on such a heavy car and no v block.

I was under my car doing the first oil change this weekend.

Didn't see anything.

Did you notice there are no frame rails to jack the car up on and the jacking points are just flanged sheet metal that have been pinched and welded?

My sources are telling me without a fitted V block on my floor jack I could cause problems should the metal deforms or break the weld.

Looks like that slot is meant for the jack they give you and that's bout it.. Why couldn't they put a nice spot to jack up, I hate that..

I didn't get a jack, I got a factory issued air compressor with a can of Fix a Flat in the spare tire well.

I've read where guys are slotting hockey pucks to use on their floor jack but I believe I'll make a V'd aluminum block when I get a spare and a jack and a lug wrench

Welcome to the world of unibodies LOL. That's why I love my body on frame CV, plenty of places to Jack it up. Old rusty unibodies are even worse cause the pinch weld usually just folds on you. I usually use a piece of 2x4.

Yeah, and what makes it worse with the 2010's they are heaveee.

When I jacked it up (under the sub frame) to change oil the last few times my floor jack strained.

On the unibod subject, I never liked that idea from the get go and kept my family in a Crown Vic while listening to my inlaws telling my wife she needed a smaller for better fuel mileage car until my mother inlaw had to be cut out of hers after an accident (power pole) folded it in half. When she got out of the hospital she bought a CV and the chin music stopped.

Yeah, I feel ya there. I was rear ended a few years ago in a 2000 CVPI at about 30mph and drove the car home (in which I was over an hour away from at the time too). An exhaust pipe broke off making it pretty load, but otherwise fine. I only sustained minor whiplash. The Cavalier that hit me was totaled on site. People always think the CV gets bad gas mileage too, but I can get 26mpg hwy and about 19 city out of my '03 P71 if I drive it conservatively, which I usually don't :evilgrin:.

Ive put mine on the lift since day two of ownership by using some 1/2 thick rubber pads and nothing else.. This is nothing new guys.. this is how we have had to lift our SHO's for 20 years.

My suggestion is to use the slotted areas in the rocker molding only, they are put there for a reason and that is a balance point.also dont go to high with it, as you raise your jack something has to move, and it if it is not a good jack with functioning wheels then as the car goes up on that corner the tires still hold the car, and the sheet metal will bend.

I hate to bring this up, but James from St.louis has a nearly perfectly 91 that they have jacked all over the place and the pinch weld is wavier that a ruffles potato chip. That will over time weaken the shit out of the car.. there are some other point you can use, but you need a real good jack or a lift..

Im putting mine back on this week to finish brakes and start on the lines, so Ill grab up some pics of the other places...

And please dont do a hurder! Never jack the car from the rails under the middle of the car! you will crush the floor in..

this is nothing new, pinch weld jacking points have seriously existed as long as unibody construction.

and your not going to break a spot weld by jacking the car up on the pinchweld. if that was possible cars would disassemble themselves during car accidents.

Just gotta be carefull when jacking a car like this up, because if the jack doesnt roll, something else has to give

I've broken a many spot welds by doing less than sticking a floor jack under them.

I'll get the guys in the machine shop to make me an aluminum v block or just buy one of these

ive never once been working on a car and had a spot weld fail without first putting tonnage to it with a porta-power or a frame machine.

and any spot weld that ive seen that were already failed did so because someone slammed their car into something and the sheet metal AROUND the weld ripped
