I recently had the left rear tire lock up do to the parking brake not releasing. I had stopped at my parents house and set the parking brake. This was the first day this year with temperatures below 20. After about 3-4 hours, I went to leave and pulled the release lever. The pedal fully returned to the up positions but couldnt get the car to move. After determining the left rear was locked I was able to drive into there garage (dragging the rear tire). I crawled underneath and with channel locks, I released the lever on that caliper. It did not take much to free it though. I also had this happen again the following day while the car was still warm. I pushed the brake but immedially released it. This time the lever was half way down but not locked.
What I am asking is statisticly is this a defenate cable problem or have the calipers themselves been known to freeze in cold weather. In eather case if the problem was caused by mosture freezing, how did it happen the second time when I had just gotten done driving the car.
Both left and right parking brake cables where new 3 years ago, as well as the rear calipers. Upon removing the left rear cable it still moves very freely. Especially when war. However I left it on the deck overnight during a 17 degree night and the next morning it did stick but it was nothing I couldnt pull free with bare hand. I have sence hung the cable in the basment and soaked it with silicone lubricant. I plan to put it back on the car this weekend if it passes the overnight freeze test this time
Does anyone have any comments, ideas or suggestions for me on this problem?
I should note that my parking brake is used multiple times daily and have never had it stick before that cold day.
