Oil on Charge Pipe coupling

Hey guys,

First post here, hoping it's not a negative one. A couple weeks ago I bought a 2014 SHO non-PP with 27k miles on it from the local Ford dealership. I've noticed oil buildup/leak on what I've been told is the charge pipe coupling shown in the picture attached.

Does anyone have experience with this? Is it anything to worry about? Any advice is appreciated.

Still under original factory warranty so if this is the sign of a major upcoming issue, I'll obviously want to get it fixed now.

Side note, I'm only on my second tank of gas and haven't hand calculated mpg's, but the readout on the dash is staying pretty low(13-14) with mixed driving. I'm only including this as it may be a symptom.

Welcome! Is the pipe firmly clamped on? These things have a habit of coming loose. Also tend to crack in the vicinity of the clamp; may not be visible until you remove the pipe and look closely. Mpg's are pretty low, are you running 87 or 93? Any issues/hesitation while accelerating? Any oil in the intake piping or intercooler?

I don't remember seeing a clamp but I'll take a look. Is it normal to have oil in that pipe at all?

First tank was "complimentary" so I'm sure it was 87. This tank is 93. No acceleration issues that I've noticed.

I'll also have to check out the intake piping and intercooler after work and report back. Is there a diagram available anywhere labeling these parts? Sorry, I'm not a mechanic!

I had this as well on the 2013 and found a leaky valve cover gasket in that area. Pull the driver side back plug and make sure it is dry. That said mine has been fixed and recently I've still seen a "buildup" in this area so I may have to take it back to the dealer - maybe there is a small leak there. Some oil in the pipe is to be expected and shouldn't be of great concern - unless it's a lot then you know...that's bad.

I would was down under the hood good, with Simple green or descent engine degreaser. Then check once a week to see if it is building up again.

Define "normal" A little oil inside is ok, that's the way the PCV system on these engines works, unfortunately. So it is "normal" to see the intake piping dry or have a very light misting of oil, and a very small amount of crud accumulation at the bottom of the intercooler. Oil outside the pipe is a) loose clamp or b) cracked pipe and not normal.

The only labeled diagrams are going to be in the Factory Service Manual (see EBay DVD/electronic manuals for example) or on the FordParts.com website. For example this page shows the intercooler:

Got some pictures from this weekend. Checked it out and cleaned it up. Plan to drive around for a couple weeks and check it again. Maybe the oil was overfilled? Does everything look normal?

From the dipstick, does look like the oil was overfilled. Should take 5.5-6 quarts max to get to the FULL (hatched) area on the dipstick. Checked 15 min after turning engine off & on a level surface, right? Getting rid of the excess would be a great idea (e.g., either drain with a pump through the dipstick tube or do another oil change). Excess oil is no good for engine seals. That hose still looks suspect to me, so keep an eye on it.

I have the same issue on the charge pipe coupling at the rear of the engine (by the firewall). Everyone seems to be in agreement that the hose is either cracked or the pipe is cracked. I've also read those plastic band clamps always leak. The oil is from the vapor residue in the charged air, not your engine oil (not directly at least).

Ecoboost Power Parts sells hotpipes, but for a basic setup it is about $575 shipped. I just want to replace those band clamps with regular hose clamps.

I noticed the same issue on my '13. Almost sure it's a cracked plastic band. Don't even know why Ford uses these crappy things on a high performance car....oh wait, yes I do.....THEY'RE CHEEEEEP! As soon as my refund arrives, I'm putting the Ecoboost Power Parts hotpipe kit with VTA! Much more robust system.

WOW, that is bad. Neither my '12 or '13 is that bad. I plan on this year to do a part hard pipe. Have an idea, but need warmer weather to start so I can start working on her.

Mines the same, rear turbo was actually replaced due to oil leak, new turbo and the same issue continues. Oil in that tube seeping out. These cars, I think, could really benefit from a dual catch can setup, to keep the blowby from causing all of this.

Do you think this, or other large diameter heat shrink tubing/clamps could seal the pipe issue?

Seems promising, the question would be do they exert pressure evenly around the circumference. Worth a try if so.
