There isn't any cross over info on the FL500S out there, but after some phone calls to manufacturers the Mobil 1 M1-113 will work. That crosses with the K&N HP-1017. I'm assuming that if I butt up an FL500S with one of those and the gasket matches up and it screws on, that it will work. I copied a list of other filters that will cross over from an Escape forum, I added the Mobil 1 and K&N filters to the list myself:

CARQUEST 84502
CHAMPION PH500
FIRESTONE PH500
FORD AA5Z-6714-A
FRAM PH10575
HASTINGS LF641
K&N HP-1017
LUBER-FINER PH500
MAZDA ZZC4-23-802
MOBIL PH500
MOBIL1 M1-113
MOTORCRAFT FL-500S
NAPA 7502
PUROLATOR L22500
WIX 57502

Anyone find any info to back up what I found?

I changed the oil today and used the Mobil 1 M1-113 filter. I also looked at the K&N HP-1017 and it looked like it would work also. The Mobil 1 filter is about 25% shorter though and the K&N has a "nut" molded on the top, but a cap wrench works fine on the Mobil 1. IMO, those are the two best filters out there, but I went with the Mobil 1 because it claims not to restrict oil flow. I just haven't read anything about the K&N and its flow. These are the only two filters I've read about that filter down to 10 microns particle size. Others are about 40. There's a hard plastic cover across the whole bottom that's easily removed with four 1/4 turn screws. The filter is easily accessible and it's vertical so you can fill it up with oil before you install it. The drain is easy to get at too. Hope this helps.

edit: I checked the K&N website, the HP-1017 crosses with the Mobil 1 M1-113.

I found this excerpt on VolvoSpeed.com:

When tested for flow at 30psi with 10w40@ 90 degrees, the K&N unit flowed 13% more oil than its Mann counterpart. Based on published numbers this would be ~8% more than the Mobil 1 filter. It is worth noting that the K&N filter is rated at 20 micron filtration, not the 10 that Mann is or the 15 for Mobil 1. Based on the driving habits and oil change frequency of most Volvo drivers, I feel the slight decrease in filtration is not a major concern and is out-weighed by the additional flow.

Here's the link for the complete review of K&N filters: http://volvospeed.com/Reviews/volvo_K&N_oil_filter.html

As you probably have ascertained, I'm kinda **** when it comes auto maintenance ;)

I would stick with a motorcraft filter personally. Motorcraft filters and oil get great reviews and they are cheap.

Switching to a K&N in the truck solely because it is a b**** to get at and the nut on top would help.

There's alot of debate on the benefits of synthetic oil. In Alaska or the Mohave Desert, it would probably have an advantage, but there's probably little bottom line difference in somewhat normal driving conditions. Motorcraft synthetic blend I believe had the hightest percentage of synthetic oil, 60% if I am not mistaken. The same probably goes for oil filters. I'm still going to use synthetic oil though  BTW, one thing I read about the K&N nut on top... push down on the wrench, it has a tendency to slip off.

Yeah, the nut isn't really a true nut... its sides are somewhat sloped; that's what makes it easy for the wrench to slip off.

Is there any means or product for putting a larger filter on? I don't know what the stock number for the V6 motor is but an FL-1A will work (M1-301). Is there anything similar? Theoretically, as long as it has the same gasket diameter and thread pitch/diameter, it should work, right...?

The Motorcraft filter for the SHO is FL-500S. That was my take on if a different filter will work, if the gasket matches up and if it screws on. But can't say if that's a valid way to assess it. I don't know if the can will fit physically, there might not be enough room between the filter and the oil pan.

I think he meant the stock filter on the '89-'95 SHO, which was the FL-400S, but you're right, it's the same concept. FWIW, according to a post I found on a Flex forum, the FL-500S has a "22mm thread" and is not interchangeable with the FL-400S.

I 2nd that. I know motorcraft filters are just upgraded purolator ones, which are rated very good already.

I was not trying to see if the FL-1A would fit on the new SHO; I doubt it would (and now I know it won't). My question is simply: will a bigger filter fit on the new SHO? And if so, which filter?

I didn't say you were--I said you were talking about finding the FL-500S's equivalent of the FL-400S's FL-1A. Stupid intersection of English vagaries and Intarwebz disconnection...

Maybe it works better in SAT format:
FL-400S is to FL-1A as FL-500S is to ...

Update on K&N oil filter part no. It's HP-2011, per the K&N website. I previously said it was HP-1017 and the Mobil 1 equivalent was M1-113, but those are short filters. Judging by the picture, the HP-2011 is a tall filter. On the K&N website, it crosses that filter with a Mobil 1 PH500... that's a Champion Lab part no. I'm used to their part nos. starting with M1. FWIW, I'm strictly using K&N filters. I use a Mobil 1 only on the first oil change, due to it's slightly lower particle size filtration. The K&N has a slightly higher flow rate. Here's where I got the into: http://volvospeed.com/Reviews/volvo_K&N_oil_filter.html

What does Ford's warranty say about non-dealer oil changes being used? If the engine grenades (probably for something non-oil related) won't they use it as a scapegoat?

If you are very **** about your maintenance, I would rethink your idea of filling up the oil filter before installing.

just keep the motorcraft fl500s filter

really.... you won't find much better then that.......

its got the silicone anti drainback valve, and the filter element is from the PureOne Purolator.

some oil filters have differences in their bypasses, while theoretically one from another engine might screw on to your engine, but it may not be to the same specs inside. This can also vary from brand to brand as well.

don't EVER feel bad about using a Motorcraft filter on your Ford engine with a spin on metal can style filter. Especially one with a S designation with the sililcone drainback valve, like Fl400s, FL800s, FL500s
