I just bought this 96 and I am slowly working out the issues. This is my latest concern.

My steering wheel has a very violent vibration that starts around 30 MPH and will continue until about 65 to 70 MPH when it seems to go away. When I describe violent, I am referring to 1/2" of right/left shutter. It is not your typical tire balance issue.

From what I can tell the wheels and tires are not the issue. And the previous owner had just replaced lower ball joints. I today replaced outer tie rod ends. And it made no difference. I can grab the tire at 3 and 9 and get some slight movement. Not more that I am concerned about, but enough that I tried replacing the outer tie rod ends.

I am at a loss right now. Suspension is my grey area. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Wheel bearing?

I was always under the impression that a wheel bearing would emit a noise. That rubbing roaring type noise that will go away with a slight tilt of the wheel. However, I am not sure. Is there a good way to check. As the complete unit is not cheap. However, I would gladly replace them if I knew for sure that I was on the right path. Thanks for you insight though. Keep it coming.

You are sure that a tire is not bad? A seperated belt inside the tire will cause a bulge, on the tread, and act very similar to what you are describing.

I can not say for sure that the tires are not junk. I CAN say that I have replacement tires waiting to get mounted and balanced. However, I guess I could rotate the tires just to make sure. But this is one odd vibration. I will swap the tires around now.

Thank you. I actually feel stupid. I rotated and it went away. Now I just have to install the new tires, and rebuild the transmission and she will be ready to be a daily driver. Thanks Kevin. :salute:

Yep, that is exactly what I was feeling when the tread started to separate on one of my previous tires.
