My car has been doing this since I bought it, but this sound is getting somewhat progressively worse. I can really only hear it at idle and up to maybe 1500 or so RPM. It does not get progressively louder with the engine.
I'm pretty sure it's not the rod bearings. It sounds as if it's possibly coming from the pully side of the engine. (?) It's more of a hollow "clank" than anything.
It's not consistant either. Like, you could hear it 4 times in two seconds, and then only hear it once the next 5 seconds.

I've done the valve adjustment, the WP is new, timing belt is on there properly, ect.
Any other quick thoughts? I'll get at least a sound file for you guys when I get a few minutes outside.

TIA,

Check the tightness of the crankshaft damper bolt and the damper for any looseness on the crankshaft. It could be a pulley or belt system component, but my first thoughts are of worn rod bearings.
