Has anyone seem any major improvements with replacing the O2 sensor? I am currently getting 23mpg at 75mph on the highway.

That's not bad at all, considering the speed. But yes, fresh O2 sensors will help improve your gas mileage. Old sensors will not do their job as efficiently, and the EEC will not get the correct readings from them, which will affect fuel economy.

Are the O2 sensors generating trouble codes? If so, you may see some improvement. If not, I suspect you wouldn't see more than an additional mile per gallon.

You'd be more likely to see improved fuel effieciency with routine maintenance including a 60K service with new plugs, valve adjustment, etc. FWIW, 23MPG highway at 75 isn't that bad...

See page two of this informative Wells Manufacturing link regarding the performance of oxygen sensors. An old or contaminated sensor "becomes sluggish... causing emissions and fuel consumption to go up." You can benefit from replacing your sensors at the same intervals as your spark plugs according to this article.

I replaced both my 02 sensors in December after one threw a code. I saw a 1-2mpg improvement and now get about 23-24mpg city/highway mix....so I wouldn't say it's a major improvement. Highway only nets me approx. 29-30mpg.

Just an odd question, would code 41 (rear bank lean) have anything to do with an O2?

rendyx,

Yes.

It means that the sensor is still showing lean after the adaptive fuel management reached its enrichment limit.

This may be due to a bad sensor, a vacuum leak, or even a weak injector.

no, your car sucks boink Gas that is :D

Unless your car lives at 4k + RPMs... it needs some serious maintenance. There is no reason for such lousy HWY gas mileage.

On the other hand the mileage you are getting on the highway is just crazy! 29-32 mpg at 75-85 mph! What, do you have super low rolling resistance tires, a perfect wheel alignment, brand new wheel bearings at all four corners, and all new suspension components not to mention an immaculately maintained engine? I can't see what else would get your 89's mileage up that high.

No matter what I do I get about 22mpg. Well, I think after the Pinnacles run this last weekend I'll be getting a little bit lower than that! :D

Rick...my 94 ATX gets 30mpg on Summer highway trips with the 3 people, luggage and the AC cranking! After topping off the gas tank I can usually go ~450 miles before the gauge hits "E".
And that's averaging 70+mph.

I'm also thinkinging about replacing my O2 sensors when I install the off-road equal length 2.25" Y pipe on its way from the SHO Shop. I'm not going to do it yet just to save $.

I got 27.8 with the cruise set @ 75mph. This was with plug gap eroded to .080 and oil in the wells. The original owner I bought the car from was honest, he said it gets slightly over 30mpg highway only. I believe(d) him. I get 22-23 horsing around town mixed driving. My worst when I first got the car and was trying for land speed records :) was 20mpg.

I would also suggest cleaning the MAF with electrical contact cleaner then resetting the computer.

FYI my 3.0 is due for its 3rd 60K in 20K and has a stack of maintenance records - including dealer window sticker :)

What gas are you using; economy, mid-grade, or premium?

I run the cheap stuff, 87-89 octane. My car only sees highway driving. Is that a possible cause of bad mileage?
