I have just bought this 94 sho atx, it had a bad motor when I got it (over heated) I replaced it with a 60k mile motor (runs great) I replaced the tranny filter and fluid while doing the job (old fluid came out red but there was a bit of crap in the bottom of the pan), I put it all back together and drove it and it seems to me that the over drive button doesn't work, is there a problem with these that anyone knows of? also when doing a fluid change what is the average amount of fluid that goes back in taking into account the torque converter.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Rod, its very common for the O/D button to malfunction on the ATXs. the most common cause is the wires on the button in the shifter handle get severed one way or another. this happened to me over the summer. you need to pull the console apart and see if this is your problem and if so, solder the wires back together or heatshrink them. its very easy to do and with a big screwdriver and a small ratchet set will only take 20-30 minutes from start to finish.

as for the fluid if youre changing it yourself i think youll only get about 3-4 quarts out of the pan unless youre using a different method. i think the number is 12qt total for the tranny, although im not sure. maybe someone else can chime in here.

I changed my fluid, (just dropped the pan like you) and I ended up putting in about 7 quarts to fill it up. It varies, so what you need to do is drive your car to normal operating temp, then put it in park on a level surface and check the fluid level with the engine running, and add accordingly, or remove.

Thanks guys, it was the wire cut for the o/d button, and i did put about 7 quarts of fluid back in the tranny, so the irregular changing probably means the tranny is on its way south.
Bummer!
Oh well.

I learned the hard way that the torque coverter held most of the tranny fluid, 18 quarts of tranny fluid later...

SHOtimer is right, my car took about 4 to 5 quarts total.
