when my engine is hot, if i remove the cap where you fill up the oil, i will see a little white smoke slowly come out. this doesnt seem right to me, but i really dont know. the engine does burn oil but its not that bad, only a little bit every now and then. my guess is possibly some water/anitfreeze got into the oil which burns off when heated possibly? i just changed the oil a couple days ago though and it still does it.

It isn't mist - but it isn't bad. Every car I have owned or worked on has done that - I would call it normal.

You are seeing the exhaust blowby that is getting past the piston rings and into the crankcase. When younger, the SHO engine had very tight clearances and very little blowby. Even on my aged SHO, there is barely any visable smoke emanating from the filler cap after it is opened; engine running or stopped.

This smoke is combustible and gets re-ingested into the engine by the PCV, or positive crankcase ventilation, system so that it can be burned in the cylinders instead of being dumped to the atmosphere like the pre-emissions controlled engines.

That is one way an engine can consume oil without showing any external smoke from the tailpipes or drips on the ground. My engine certainly burns oil this way too.
