I already posted this in my intro post but this was my baby for a long time! A 1972 Ford GTS. I picked it up in 05’ dirt cheap when nobody even knew what a Torino was. Most people thought was a Chevelle lol. When I first got the the 351c was a complete dog. I bought the car with the intention building the blower motor the only problem was the 351c had very little aftermarket support for it.
It took forever to complete and I had to do a lot of fabrication. You couldn’t find a 351c blower intake so I made my own by welding an aluminum riser to the Edlebrock intake. Figuring out the dual carbs and the throttle linkage was a total pia. I went through three sets of carbs before I found the right combination which was rough at $1200/per, 15 years ago. After I got the motor/exhaust figured out I put in a custom built 9” with a 3:90 gear and 35 spline axels. The car came with leaf springs from the factory so I replaced those with some drag shocks that I had to fabricate mounts for. I actually cracked the frame on it near the rear drivers side tire on my first hard dig . I welded the frame back together then the movie Gran Torino came out and suddenly the after market scene for the both Torino and the 351c exploded, if only had waited a few years it would have saved me a shit load of time and money!
I then started having seizures and broke my back (13crushed discs), I was told I would never drive again. I sold the car to one of my best friends who still owns it today. I don’t remember a lot of the finer details because the seizures I was having at the time really damaged my memory.
luckily the doc was wrong and the seizure activity subsided and I am no longer considered epileptic and was able to get my DL back.
I loved the car but as some of you SHO pioneers can attest to - it becomes more pain than pleasure when your kind of trailblazing a high performance build with little to no aftermarket support. I went through multiple motors and had to rebuild the trans a few times.
I almost bought a new SHO in 15’ which cost more than a 2021 Explorer ST (crazy!). I called Livernoise to get a feel for the platform and I got a bad vibe from them so I held off on purchasing the SHO.
I can’t turn wrenches anymore so I watched the platform and waited till some of you took on the burden. Mad props to all you SHO record holders for providing a rough template to follow and propelling the platform forward! I sure appreciate and respect the joy and misery that goes into it all.
