I have a noise comming from my engine area, i know I can't really be more specific though...

it sounds like a propeller beating away in water like a old paddlewheel or such... kinda wierd noise... defintely RPM related

any thoughts on this?

I pulled the timing cover off the other day to paint it and just for the **** of it.... the belt was changed by the previous owner and it does look new and tight...

I almost might have to get a sound clip of this maybe somehow....

maybe this is a common problem that someone knows all about?
:oogle:

I've heard about crank cancer, maybe someone can elaborate for me because I didn't find anything that specific with a search.

ALSO, it looks like the water pump pulley is wobbling slightly, and maybe even the crank pulley... supposedly the water pump was changed by previous owner a few thousand ago....

what do you guys think of that water pump pulley wobbling slightly?

if I took off the serpentine belt tomorrow this might give me a better idea what im dealing with..........

I'm just hoping its some sort of accessory...

its not such a fast, hard tapping sound like in Racer X's crank cancer case or such...

It definitely sounds like a belt/pulley issue. When you get the serpentines off, turn them inside out and make sure there are no cracks in the grooves; if so, replace. Also slide the belt between your thumb and finger, feeling for "low" spots in the ridges.

Then try and wobble the pullies yourself. If you can the bearing is shot. Replace.

Check to make sure that the rubber that holds the inner race to the outer race of the harmonic dampener has not separated. This is difficult to determine with the unit on the crankshaft, but you might be able to reach down there with both hands and try and rotate the outer race. If you can move it easily, go get some butter and jelly, because it's toast.

Good luck.

Ok, take the serpentine belt off and turn the car on. If you have no noise when doing that you know it's something that's run on the serpentine belt. (ie: alternator, serp belt tensioner, idler pulley, water pump or power steering pump, etc.) If the noise IS still there then you'll have to dig deeper into the timing belt area.

Edit: It is ok to run the car with no serpentine belt for a few minutes. The alternator can't charge the battery because it won't be turning but as long as your battery is decent it shouldn't hurt it for a couple of minutes.

I was thinking of taking it around the block with no belt to see what if it feels faster but I know from other cars with no water pump things get heated quickly lol.....

This morning I took the belt off, and I'd say I defintely have a PS Pump issue. The noise is gone without the belt on. I also felt the PS pulley and it felt slightly loose....

the outside edge (fender) of the PS pulley is slightly sharp, the belt has some spots against the outside edges that look like something is touching and doing some slight wear.. belts still good imho tho...

any ideas? try to tighten pulley?

Can you buy a new pulley for the pump?

or is it most likely the entire P/S pump needs replacing?

If the pulley is just loose on the shaft, just tighten it up by sticking a screwdriver through one of the holes to anchor it.

If the shaft is loose in the pump, time for a new pump.

If the edge of the pulley is sharp, look for the cause.

im not the greatest person at engine work, I might be decent on transmissions but I'm just now starting to learn the finer aspects of engine operation.
