no back up lights on 89

At the back-up light switch on the tranny. It's right next to the clutch cable, close to the frame, and has a two wire plug.
EDIT:
If you look at the eye hole for the clutch cable, follow it right, and you can see the sensor on the edge of the trans.

Easiest way to get to it is to remove the airbox and MAF, it should be sitting right below that on the top side of the transmission, pointing straight up. There's a sensor screwed into the hole.

Not to minimize the technical expertise of those who'd posted previously, but have you checked to see if you have power at the sockets? It could be something as simple as failed bulbs...

I too would always try the easiest possible solution first. The shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line---like he said, I'd check the bulbs and connections at the taillights before tearing out the airbox and all that. It may very well be the sensor under the hood, but check the bulbs and connection at the lights first.
