ya... mechanics I spoke to said not to. Maybe I will anyway. Working on getting a walnut blasting rig and some education for cleaning valves etc first. Would definitely like to have valve installed for the ptu. Just installed a stahlbus oil valve plug.

Mechanics you spoke to are wrong. There is information and evidence all over this forum and the rest of the interwebs. You don't have a warranty and these are not cheap.

brought to another mechanic. I was told it is not serviceable. I was also told it has been replaced already at least once by the looks of it.

it looks like the police ptu is different or configured differently

so $70 later i have my pcv valve changed and told the same once again

These guys are right. Change the PTU and RDU fluids every 30K miles. It can be done at home with about $60 worth of fluids and some basic tools (3/8" socket with extensions, a siphon, and a small pump to put it back in, then a little thread lock for replacing the cap). I did mine last month. If I can do it anyone can.

They put that in the original maintenance guidelines and people do not want to tackle it but it needs doing. Maybe someone on the forum has a driveable area recommendation of a place that will do it. We wouldn't repeat it to new members all day every day if it wasn't needed.

I also presume that high useage vehicles like taxis and police cars have severe duty maintenance that have different maintenance intervals and recommendations. The local PD here went away from the taurus PI because of the drivetrain issues.

It’s dismaying when these well reviewed shops act like its not possible. I may attempt to do it myself but im not too experienced. you guys are ruining my sense of completion of having paid my due diligence

It truly isnt that bad of a job. You are lucky. Your PTU has a drain plug.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. The knowledge here out rivals the majority of Ford Techs and well reviewed shops. Most of us do all the wrench work on our SHO's, so we know our way around them.

You can do this. It's had a few write ups and there probably is 1 or 3 youtube vids on doing this. The fluid amount is very little just need to get it in there. Any owner of a SHO from 1989 to now has had to learn to turn wrenches on things. Welcome to the club! Besides we don't want a little maintenance to help you fend off anything too expensive. It's brotherly bugging you about it. Seen too many go boom.

It's really as simple as unscrewing some caps, sucking out the old fluid, and squirting in new drain fluid. That is for those of us unfortunate enough not to have drain plugs.

With a PI version, yours will be much easier since getting the old fluid out is much harder (through the cap) than putting the new fluid back in.
