So finally, a bright spot in what's been a tumultuous, roller coaster of a month.

The new ATP +2 Turbos were delivered to my doorstep this past Thursday, October 17th, 2013 compliments of FedEx!

I think these are the second set ever to have been released. The owner of the 1st set, 4DRHTRD, who owns a Ford Flex, and lives out in AZ, put down OVER 600awhp with them.

I honestly likely will NOT be tuning my SHO anywhere near as aggressively as his set up (keeping in mind he's running other mods) but the potential is there to do so, and it's exciting to be part of the core group of Ecoboost enthusiasts who are helping facilitate getting these power plants to the next "stage" in their performance potential.

These turbos constitute a true "full" upgrade in the sense that the wonderfully talented staff over at Advanced Tuning Products (ATP) have gone through the painstaking expense of upgrading, and enlarging BOTH the Compressor AND the Exhaust Wheels.

They have also upgraded the seals throughout, installed a better wastegate, and the biggest factor, they've completely reworked the entire center portions of the turbo, implementing a ball bearing center.

I believe there are now a total of three companies out there that are selling upgraded turbos, but ATP is the only one at this point, performing a true upgrade as outlined above.

The other two companies have only performed limited aspects of an upgrade.

Now as dorky as I felt, I asked my youngest to grab the iPad, and record me opening these and viewing them for the first time. Thought that'd be kind of cool to share with the community to view them for the 1st time, as I had.

Like I said, after being sick and hospitalized the last few weeks, this is/has been a refreshing bright spot, in a rather chaotic month.

I would also be remiss if I didn't send out HUGE "thank you's" to BOTH 4DRHTRD & Darreli for each of their integral roles they played in making this become a reality for me. Truly appreciative of BOTH of them for the involvement in the process.

Thanks guys! :thankyou: :hail:

So here's the video of the turbo unveiling (thanks to my youngest daughter for her handy camera work) ------>

So, I am tentatively slated to install these tomorrow, Monday, October 21st, 2013.

Pretty damn excited to say the least.

Hopefully more videos, and faster times just around the corner. :omgsho:

Well...... Darrell has the upgraded turbos from Tial Motorsports.

That upgrade involves upgrading & enlarging the compressor wheel only. The also improved the seals.

He's had his tune adjusted, and is not, or has not, run into any fueling issues.

I am supplementing my stock fuel system with the 100% Methanol.

I don't anticipate having fueling issues at this point. If I do, well.....

Cross that bridge when I come to it. Otherwise..... onward **!

Interesting. For some reason I thought the fuel system was the biggest holdback. Can't wait to see what it makes for power.

Well, Winter's coming, so not too terribly pressed for a new (adjusted) tune file yet.

Although i'll inquire how far out LMS is as far as their dyno scheduling.

I have a feeling Dan himself is gonna work his magic on it.

Besides, 4DR's running a group buy (on another community) for the custom hard hot pipe set up.

I have a disticnt feeling I'm gonna end up splitting a factory hose or two, with the increased boost pressures. So i'll need to save up some coin for that aspect of it, well before I go and get'n all bonkers on the tuning.

So all in due time.

Good thing Mother Nature's gonna reign/lasso me in for the time being.

Things happen for a reason, so I guess somebody above is looking out for me.

Well...... last night was my 1st night back to work in 3+ weeks after having been sick.

As such, to say today is a "re-adjustment" day, as it pertains to any semblance of a sleep cycle would be an understatement.

Slept like crap this morning, and I decided to make a trek out to the mechanic's shop before this season's 1st snowfall arrives. Looks like a rain/snow/ice mix. Yuck. Seems a little earlier than usual.

Anyhow, made it out there, and shot the **** with my pal for a little bit.

He had the front OEM turbo already removed, and the new ATP Upgraded Turbo installed in it's place.

He was working on the rear one when I arrived.

My pal commented that the front OEM turbo appeared "pretty tired" adding that there was oil coming from the main seal and the wheels looked less than desirable.

He said that was likely due to pushing the factory turbos beyond their designed capacities.

Nothing unusual really, just said it was "good" that these upgraded one's were going in their place.

So not wanting to be too much in his way, and knowing I still had to get my butt back home to grab me an afternoon power nap as I'm on shift again tonight, I opted to snap a couple of pics of my own.

My pal did say he took some pics on my behalf.... so I'll have to post those when the install's all completed.

Here's a few images of the factory turbo removed, a couple of the new ATP turbo installed, as well as the incredibly restrictive "hot" (pressurized side) of the piping/plumbing, and one or two of the factory electric BOV's.

Enjoy, now going to back to bed.

Looks good Mike!

After looking at these pictures, it seems there is still A LOT of room for improvement as far as improving the stock piping and turbos.

Why did you decide on a stock replacement turbo that was upgraded vs a different, larger turbo all together? Did you want to maintain the factory look? Not want to play with any rerouting of wires or rewiring in general?

Thanks for the kudos!

To say the folks over at ATP did a tremendous job with these, would be an understatement.

Primary reason for going with a reworked, stock turbo housing is essentially lack of room within the engine compartment.

There is literally no room to place a larger housing/larger turbo in the locations where the OEM's are positioned in/on the block.

Additionally, as I stated previously, there are only three companies that I am aware of, that are currently offering turbo upgrades.

ATP is the only one of those three, that is performing a true, full upgrade, from "A-Z" so to speak.

More (tech related) info can be found here -----> http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchan...oduct_Code=ATP-SHO-001&Category_Code=35V6TRAN

Cheaper price on them can be found here -----> http://shop.ecoboostpowerparts.com/...plorer-Sport-MKT-MKS-Turbo-Upgrade-ATPTV6.htm

I really had no priority on holding the line on a stock appearance, or fumbling around with the wiring etc. that was never an issue, or a concern.

Also, because Kirk Doucette hand fabricated both my catless downpipes (enlarged to 3" diameter), and also fabricated/modified my intake system (also 3" diameter) along with my intentions of getting in on 4DRHTRD's Group Buy on the "Hard Hot Pipes" (picture attached) and those are a 2" diameter....

I, of all people, have even less room to go throwing in larger turbos overall.

Besides, if you notice on that link to ATP, they're ******* a 200-250hp increase with these turbos alone, versus the stock ones.

So that's nothing to sneeze at, as far as HP increase.

Moving along, I did pick up the car earlier today, and I had very limited time behind the wheel, however, I am very happy with the little bit of seat time I did manage to get in, with the new turbos installed.

Mind you, I still am running my old custom dyno tune file, therefore, I still need to return to LMS for yet another newer tune file to compliment these latest additions.

I noticed ZERO lag. None whatsoever.

Turbos seem a little "noisier" than the stockers, but it's not like it's a distraction by any means, just a simple observation.

I did not really romp on the car, as I wanted to make sure all the oil was flowing through the new set up, and what not.

But I did "lay into it" about 3/4 throttle on two occasions, and was very happy with response. Elated actually.

Car peaked just over 16psi, and I know my current LMS tune, had the stock turbos peaking just at, or slightly over 18psi.

These new turbos are reported to run efficiently to 30psi. So there's plenty of room there to jack up the boost for sure.

But with the onset of Winter quickly approaching, I'm not terribly concerned about get'n out to LMS with any pressing sense of urgency.

I'll keep reporting back from time to time, as updates occur.

If you guys want them, I either have them, can make them or can order them. :p

I have the turbos on my Flex as well, the only time I've really experienced lag is at the track, when I launch there's about 1/2 a second before I hit boost, before it was off the line with stockers. I was trying to brake boost off the line with the ATP but I'm now just flooring it and the converter flashes enough to hit boost quicker so problem solved. Without my 17" drag radials it's pointless however as on street tires either way to launch just causes the car to break the tires loose at around 4K (600+ WTQ) and shuts the throttle. :D

Sideline a bit here, but when did we start calling intercooler piping 'hot pipes '? Does this make your engine to turbo piping 'hotter pipes'?

Those are called exhaust manifolds. :)
The kids call it that and it works for me. :)
Hot side of the turbo, cold side of the turbo is the way most refer to it now.
Everything is getting dumbed down. :)

Tired Turbos?!

I have to ask - what upgrades have you done to make the turbos 'tired' in only three years?

I am considering an LMS tune next spring (stage III or possibly IV), but am concerned about the longevity of drivetrain (turbos, transfer case, etc.)
BUT
If a LMS stage IV will wear this thing out before I even have it paid off, I guess that a tune is not in my future...

I have already had the AWD transfer case replaced at 3000 miles - bone stock, no performance upgrades yet - service tech said he had seen this before - puking oil out of the vent tube for no reason.
800 miles since - no leaks yet - fingers crossed...

Thanks for any insight!

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean that they're NOT out to get me!:nut:
