I have just replaced the BF Goodrich OEM tires, worn out at 30K, with Continential Conti ExtreamContact 225VR55-16s. Excellent tires! Very quiet, great wet and dry traction, aggressive tread pattern and come with a 400 AA rating. They were a bargin at Tire Rack for only $79.00 each. The thing I like about the Tire Rack is that they have a customer feedback area for all of the tires that they sell. This way you can see what other buyers have thought of the tires you are looking at buying. The Continentials received great reviews. I'm very happy with them. thumb

plans have changed for the new tires, i had my wheel off while i was porterizing the intake and found the belts showing on the inside of the tire. i went to discount tire to get some prices and the manager there is gonna give me michelin pilot xgt's for $40 off per tire. there supposed to be pretty good tires, everyone's said that michelins are supposed to be great. i'm getting the tires and alignment done tomorrow, so i'll let you know how they turn out. any but else have excessive wear on the insides of the tires? the treads on the outside are about 1/16 inch, but bald on the inside.

I replaced the Goodyear RSAs with BF Goodrich G-Force KDWS Z rated 16 inch at about 42000 miles.. Great wet and dry performance tire. Fair in the snow. They were recommended by a few guys from V8SHO a couple of years ago.

my SHO had michelin pilots on it when I got it, pretty good tire. hit a big rock in the middle of the road and blew out one [better a tire than an oil pan]. replaced with a set of bridgestone potenza re750s. pricey but excellent in wet and on an off ramp that pilots squealed and complained [not loudly though] these tires ask for more. again they are pricey but best bet is to buy the best tire you can afford. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the pilots the ones I replaced were due for the tire graveyard within 5k anyway.

OFF TOPIC...Neil, hated to know you sold that Cobra. I had actually downloaded the pix of that car with all the specs...have had a color re-print on my office bulletin board for nearly two years.
A display of excellence right down to the FMS heavy duty clutch and Lakewood bellhousing.
Take care Neil.......

Ouch. That is scary. And running the tires too long, IMO. You will have hit the wear bars some time ago.

I have not had Continentals in a long time, but they were the OEM supplied tires on my '81 Scirocco long ago, and were a pretty good tire maker at that time. In general, I think Ricky just above is on target and you should always buy the best tire you can afford. After all, the only thing between your car and the road is the tires. :)

Falken Ziex are excellent in both the wet and dry, have a pretty good tread life, and are the same price as the Kuhmo's for a betteer quality tire. Both my friends use them, and they're awesome. I'm currently using Falken GR-Beta FK451's, and they're better in both the wet and the dry, but you pay for the extra performance. They're more exspencive, and have a tad lower ewar rating. I swear by them though. thumb

Even back in about 1995 (yes, the Ziex have been out that long), I thought the Falken Ziex were sadly lacking in any real performance category and exchanged them for the now extinct Yokohama AVS Intermediate. There was a significant increase in the capabilities of handling and braking with this very old tire. The Ziex tire is a decent "touring" tire, but hardly a performance tire.

i got the michelin pilot xgt's put on toady and they seem to be pretty good. it's supposed to be raining all week, so i won't know how good they are for a while. they get pretty good wet traction though, they wouldn't break free, even when i was trying to get them to. they're supposed to be great for cornering, but we'll find out later.

I have Michelin Pilot XGT-H4's on my car and have been very pleased with them, they are great in the wet and really stick in the dry. These were on the car when I bought it,I have about 80% tread left, so they are nicely scrubbed in and when I purchase new tires I will probably stay with Michelin for my machine!

The Zeix just got replaced with a better, newer, and comepltetly different Zeix last year, and it is an excellent tire. I've ridden in and driven cars with Yoko's and a few others and none seemed to haev the responsiveness on turn, and only matched the Ziex on grip in the dry.

I'd have to go with Paul here on the Kuhmo's. I am running the same set and love them. I have had MANY different brands of tires through the years and to date still love every set of Kuhmos or Nittos that I have owned. I don't care about a name on my tire so much as how they perform.

The XGT's are a great tire as well, especially at that price.

Which "Yokos?" Not all Yokohama tires are made for the performance end of the range. Some are just "tires." I said that I made that change back in 1995. Yokohama has developed many new tires since then too. Falken has never made a class competitive ultra high performance or maximum performance tire.

Just for the record, the last four sets of tires I have installed on my car have been Bridgestones. I am on my 11th or 12th set of ultra high performance (Tire Rack's label) tires on this car and kinda know which ones made the SHO handle. Tire Rack has been a helpful source of information for many of my tire purchases and I have found a good correlation between their test results and my personal impressions.

The Yoko's that I remeber specifically were low pro 17's on a lowered Celica. The were AVS Intermediates if I remeber correctly. They were very nice, but they couldn't compare quite equally to the Ziex low pro 17's on my friends lowered Civic. Now that I think about it, wasn't the AVS discontinued last year? So I guess that wasn't the most fair comparo.

As for Falken not having a competitive UHP tire or MaxP tire, the Beta has gotten much praise for low cost and excellent drip both in the wet and dry. Also, the Azenis has been approved by the SCCA for classes that otherwise only allow R Compound rubber because it's such a high performance tire, yet retains some semblence of a decent wear rating. wink Falken also has some very wicked race rubber back in it's domestic market of Japan. They aren't completely without merrit. After all that I'll say that you sound as if you have more experiance on the matter, and most specifically with your car. You probably have a better perspective of what works on your car. :D Later.
