i know everyone has their own preference on tires, but i'm just trying to get an idea on which ones are good and not too expensive. my roommate says kuhmo ecstas work great on his car, anyone else have them? i live in north carolina, so snow traction isn't a problem or anything, but i really want some tires that do good in the rain, cause i'm tired of spinning them when ever i start from a stop. i've only had the factory goodyears that came one the car.

Everyone I have talked to has mixed feelings about the Kumho 712's...some people love them while others cannot wait to get rid of them. I am also in the market for new, relatively cheap summer tires and the best buy I have found so far are the Yokohama AVS ES 100's. A few people have them on the SHOforum and all seem to love them. If you go to tirerack.com, they tested the 712's vs. the AVS ES 100's and the ES 100's won in the shootout of the bargain summer tires! The reviews on the Yoko ES 100's are also higher in every category than the Kumho Ecstra 712's. Let us know how it goes! Good luck! beer

Ooops...double post. One more point, the Yoko's are 8 bucks more than the Kumho's so they are very comparable! beer

I have the Nitto 450 extremes, but no rims yet. I have a friend with them, but he is not in it for performance. Has anyone ever used them before? They are on Discount Tire Direct for $105.00 for 17" to answer your question. The Kumos are on www.discountiredirect.com for 93.00 for 17". I did not get the price for 16" or 18 if you have that size rim. I wanted to get the Kumo 712, but when I called Tire Rack they would not sell them to me. They said that my car was to heavy for them. They said that they would Firestone on me. They also said that they sound like truck tires going down the highway! josh shrug

I have Michellin Pilot XGT H-4's on my SHO, they were on the car when I bought it and seem to stick pretty good. Anyone know anything about these tires? Are they a pretty good tire? I have no idea how much they are per tire either

I had Kelly Charger ZR16's on my stock rims...now I ahve 17's with Goodyear Eagle's.....I personally like the Goodyears....they are better in the snow and rain. I also would not pay to have ZR's put back on cuz I dont plan on driving that fast everyday.

I have the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 is a 245/45/16 size on 7.5" rims. The tire is great on the track and the best rain tire I've ever had. I would buy them again with no questions. They are not good below 40F though.

I also have the Nitto 450s. A great highway tire. Not the best for ********* cornering.

You guys using the low-budget Kuhmo 712s and all-season tires would be very surprised by the difference from a set of real performance rubber. Tires are the most important component of the suspension and safety system (handling and braking). Don't go cheap where it really counts.

The ES100s are a very good set of tires for the cost and comparable to higher priced ultra high performance tires. They were a big improvement in the handling and braking performance over the OEM Bridgestone RE92s on my wife's 2000 Maxima SE. Much less expensive too.

I have to agree with Scott, having had a set of the 712s just like SHOZ123s. I would certainly not put them on my car again. Compared to better tires, I would rate their rain performance as reasonably good, their dry performance as only OK, and their cool (below 50F-60F weather performance as outright poor. They are not a serious tire for good handling, but they are an acceptable tire if you want to keep your costs down and never have cold mornings before you change to winter tires.

Personally I found the Kumhos in the 245 size to be excellent road course tires. A recent test I read in Grass Root Motorsports showed them to be comparable to the Goodrich KDWs. And I've found them to be a better rain tire than the SZ 50 Firestones. In fact the best rain tire I have ever had in something that wide.

The new Kumho MX is even better. At this time when I wear the Ecsta out I will replace them with the same or the MXs depending on budget at the time unless there is something better that comes along.

I have Toyo Proxes on my SHO. They are by no means cheap, but they are also extremely high-quality tires. I rarely ever lose traction, even in the rain. On the other hand, they havd no traction in the snow, but it can be fun! thumb

I just had a set of BFG geforce KDW's put on a couple of weeks ago, after reading favorable reviews on tire rack and having good experience with BFG before. They handled great today in the rain (though they still broke free when I really punched it), and the dry traction is excellent. I tried to squeal them going around a corner, and they wouldn't. Of course, neither would the original RSA's that were still on there at 50,000 miles oh_my

Want my old Kumho 245s SHOZ123? They are about 3/4 down after about 13,000 miles of windy back roads and are currently holding a couple of racing dingies off the floor of my garage. wink

3/4s down??? They should be perfect for road racing. I have about 15k on my Kumhos and about 3/4s down. How long do you expect a performance tire to last?

The later kumhos also are a different compound. Supposedly they are a silica based compound that wears better as the tires wear down.

I like to get 15,000 miles out of a set of summer performance tires. One full season. With some you do, with some you don't. I do not think the Kumhos wore more quickly than they should have. About average.

A number of the tire companies are now using two or more layers of tread compound with the idea of keeping the tire responsive as it wears down. Good to hear that Kumho is giving it a try. Its a good idea. Bridgestone has been doing it for a couple of years. They had such a compound layer system on my last from them and it seems to work very well.

I used Nitto NT 450s on my Probe GT and never had any complaints. They always gripped well for me.
