I am currently in search of 15-17 SHO PP with low miles and have a few questions for the professionals that could make my purchasing decisions easier.

I am currently driving a 2013 BMW X3 35i M Sport and LOVE IT! However, I just rolled over 100K miles and my extended warranty is over. I do not want to be hit with huge repair bills, so it is time to let it go. I have always loved the sleeper status vehicles as well as AWD, this is what has gravitated me towards the SHO (and the fact that they are very reasonably priced).

Here are my questions:
  • What extended warranties do you recommend? Anything available to 100K bumper to bumper?
    • My BMW extended warranty was bumper to bumper to 100K with a $50 deductible. It saved my A** a few times!
  • Those of you running tunes, CAI, cooler stats, 3 bar, etc.. How stock do you take your car back to before bringing it into dealer for warranty work?
    • I was running a JB3 piggy back and CAI on my X3 and had to take them both off every time I went to the dealer. I was able to get away with the CAI a couple times, but felt like they were giving me the hard press about it!
  • I like the Mayan gray inserts. I will have 2 kids and car seats in the back daily. Any concerns with staining or not being as durable as the all black leather seats? I keep a clean car and do not allow juice/food in the car, but im more concerned with the snow/ice on the kids boots that will inherently get drug onto the seats from time to time in the wonderful Chicago area climate.

Lastly, just a comment....
I test drove a 16 a few days ago for the first time. I LOVE the interior and unassuming styling of the car, but I have to be honest; I did expect a little more in the performance category. I have been reading a lot of articles on this forum raving about the tuners and am hoping this will wake it up quite a bit! My tuned X3 at the track was running consistent 13.3-13.5. Please tell me that a tuned/stat/3 bar SHO will run at, or better than these times.

Thanks in advance for providing answers, guidance, and knowledge!

I don't have a warranty on my tuned 2013. I do have a good relationship with my dealer and have asked if I need to remove the 3bar and tune prior to service. They have said that would not be necessary.

A tuned SHO with the mods you listed should run under 13 in the quarter.

No idea on the interior. I don't allow food, drink, mud, sludge or kids in mine :)

Thanks for the note Majestic!

Good to know that you can be honest with SOME dealers!

Would also like to ask how these things handle in the snow (with proper AS rubber)?

A tuned 2015+ Ford Edge Sport can outrun that X3 ;)

Livernois has now introduced a T550 package that they say will make it much easier to dip into the 11's in a quarter. And I believe them.

These power gains are impressive. However, I don't need this level of power out of the daily. 12.9's is more than acceptable for me. I have a dedicated track/show car to itch that scratch!

That's what I'm looking for! Thanks

Have you had much warranty work done? Any mods that you take off in advance?

You will want to take off any mods that Ford may say contributed to the demise of a part that you are wanting them to replace under warranty. You will also want to make sure they do not flash the pcm while you have a tune loaded - so either tell them explicitly not to flash it, or remove the tune before it goes to the shop.

I have the Hurricane package which is the CAI, 3BAR, 160F TSTAT and tuner. I swap out the 3BAR for the stock 2BAR and flash to stock when I take it to the shop. I would also suggest looking at the 2016 and up as you get the benefit of Sync3 rather than the older Sync2.

I have the Ford ESP. You can haggle the price if buying from a dealer or look online there are a few dealers that sell them nationwide.

I have the grey inserts and haven't had an issue. The kids don't eat or drink in it unless we are going on a long trip but I have snow/salt/etc here in NY as well. Handles the snow fine with all seasons, yeah you can drive stupid, especially with PP turning everything off but there is a big difference between it and our Altima in the snow. I second looking at 2016+ for SYNC 3. A tune/3bar/stat should be more than enough for what you are looking for. I would recommend swapping to 2bar flashing it back before going to the dealer even if they are okay with the tune. It makes there job easier and you don't have to worry about issues if they flash the ECU while it's there.
