Hi all -

My name is Justin, and I'm new here. Just bought a 93 ATX, and am looking to adjust my valve lash, but I have a few questions to which I've not found answers yet...

1. What is the number of the stock valve shim? (I've not seen this anywhere, and haven't yet taken the intake apart...trying to save time since I'll have to order the shims).

2. The clearances listed on the SHOTimes website correspond to the distance between the shim and the cam, no? And thus, if the clearance is in check, I just replace the (presumably worn) shim with the factory size, and if it's out, I compensate with a larger or smaller shim?

3. So for instance, say that the stock shim is 2500, and the clearance is wide by .002...that means I use a 2550, right?

I know this is probably information that's been rehashed, but I haven't found ANYTHING online (aside from SHOTimes's excellent FAQ), and I'm trying to save time, since I want to drive the car, but I'm not too impatient as to not order the parts needed to perform the necessary maintenance.

On a last note, is there any debate on using a cheap timing belt versus the real thing?

Thanks - Justin

1. You really can't preorder the shims since you won't know what sizes you'll need until you get in there.

2. and 3. Basically you got it.

Use the Gates belt. (check my website)

BTW I'll be renting shim kits in the near future, you'll understand why you need one after you look over the site.

1. There is no set number.... Numbers indicate sizes... Sizes are determined once you measure the clearance. The only way to know what you need is to measure, then take out the old and find out what size was put in. From there you can calculate what you will need.

2. Yes, the clearance is between the shim and the base of the cam. Things take a set so they may need a different size.

3.

As you can see, both vavles on the #5 cylinder were out of spec.... That's with only 59k miles on the motor.

I'll have to do some searching on my old computer, but I have the Excel version. That was how I recieved it from Scott two years ago.

Someone needs to do a valve stem seal replacement... I'd like to know I helped somebody ;)

I often hear about when someone uses the guides, I'll let you know for sure if anyone does.

Great job on it :thumb:

BTW, there were some suggestions in that thread I started a while back about the guide, did you check them out?

You guys are fast!

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. Next question would logically be, where do you guys normally go for shims? I already lucked into the tools on eBay, so I don't need to rent a kit (and besides, I'm a college student, so I'm relatively poor).

You can get shim rental kits from www.shonutperformance.com.

You can also go to you local Yamaha dealership and ask for some 29mm shims in the size you need. I used to know a model of a bike that took that size. They will ream you at about $13 per shim. I've talked them down to $7. We often pull shims from junk yard motors for the club here. When you find out what you need, you can also post here... I'm sure someone will help you out. I currenlty have some really thin shims in my own collection... The more common sizes I have divided up between two different clubs collection.

Maybe and maybe not. If the shim is worn a bit, using a 2525 might take you where you want to go as well, since you'd be recovering some thickness with a new, non-worn shim.

I can provide the spreadsheet in its original Excel format for the Forum to post. I can also provide my valve gapping procedure if there is a place to host/post it. I also have a clutch replacement procedure that I generated after replacing my own clutch.

Bizzy, would you like some of my info for sharing with the Forum?
