New Battery Type And BMS Q

2015 SHO, 50K miles. Was bought used a year ago and it came with a Walmart battery. It sat for an extended time this winter so the battery went down to zero.

I bought a new Interstate battery from Costco and all is well. However I do have two questions:

1. Battery types available were lead acid and AGM. I went with the former. Should I have chosen the latter? I still have it as an option as I could move the lead acid battery to another vehicle I have that also uses a Group 65 battery.

2. I've been told I should reset the Battery Management System. I can't seem to find clear instructions on how to do this using Forscan. I wanted to try the "flash high beams five times then hit brake pedal three times" trick, but don't see the battery light on my dash. I have also read that if the car sits for more than eight hours it will reset itself. True?

I tried to do the headlight method and it didn’t work for me either, if you have a scan tool they usually have a BMS reset function. I have no idea about FORSCAN, others will have to weigh in.

You should have purchased a AGM battery. Reset BMS is under service functions in Forscan.

The flash lights and whatever is BS, IMNSHO. I haven't been able to find that published anywhere except internet chatter. The BMS will reset if the car sits undisturbed for eight hours or so. That is in the service manual. However, it will not reset the battery age. The BMS counts the days the battery is in service. Only a BMS reset will reset the days. Forscan will reset the BMS but, it may require a free license or an extended license. IDK because I have an extended license.

Specifically, this is what the service manual says:

Carry out the BMS Reset using the scan tool after the battery is connected, if the battery has been replaced. If the BMS Reset is not carried out, it takes approximately 8 hours for the BCM to learn the new battery state of charge. During this 8 hour period, the vehicle must be undisturbed, with no doors opened or keyless entry button presses. If the vehicle is used before the BCM is allowed to learn the new battery state of charge, engine off load shedding can still occur and a message may be displayed.

Whether you have a lead acid battery or an AGM battery is personal preference, IMO. The AGM may last longer. The better question is CCA. 650, 750 AND 850 are available. I believe 750 CCA was the OEM battery. I prefer the 850 CCA battery.

I have a 2019 and replaced the original battery with another lead acid battery and I did nothing afterwards. And prior to this, every 6 months I cleaned the battery terminals and didn't bother to do anything special afterwards either.
